Hi Umar. ur doing a gr8 work with ur website. By the way i would like to know if there is any solution for doing electives when the dates r overlapping. i have got at university of south alabama n SUNY. bt dates r overlapping by 1week. i dont wanna let go of either of em. n in case i postpone my Suny elective by a month, then ill hv li'l more than 3wks of zero period which i cant afford. so ne advices from your side?

hi varun, thanks a lot for your kind words! I did not have really a big clash of dates but at one place, I requested them to reschedule my four weeks elective into three weeks elective which they did so you can request one of them to reduce the duration of electives from four weeks to three weeks . Generally most of the elective programs are very friendly and try to help and accommodate in whatever ways possible....  I hope it helps ... Take care and best of luck

Hey Umar,

I'd like to get an opinion whether an elective done at U of T is comparable to an elective done at say an average institute in the states (not the likes of Harvard, Yale, Baylor)..?

Thanks in advance

Hello Umar Bhai, how are u doing?
I got acting internship in IM at CASE WESTERN RU, can you provide some insight into this elective as u have already done 1 at YALE. How should i prepare myself for the maximum gains and a good LOR?
I am posting the same question on ur website, plz reply at ur ease....tk cr.

Congrats deepak! Thats really good. I think you will find an Indian resident from PGIMS, Rohtak there in IM (some 'Kalra') He matched in 2009 or 2008.

did u check out this page regarding how to get the most out of ur electives?

http://umartariq.com/index.php?q=node/17

people have told me that during electives show that you are interested in that specialty and WORK HARD. thats the idea i get. Plus Internships have more responsibilty than an elective (so more better experience) and u'll have to work nearly as a first year resident. So gear up and enjoy!

Umar bhai will add more information if he feels so.

Best wishes.

hi depak

first of all congrats...

could u plz let us know what kinda profile did u apply to CASE WESTERN with?that would be great help..and how to maximise chances of acceptance..

thanks

Hi Deepak, how r u? well honestly speaking it is much like electives except thaat you have more responsibility... Honestly speaking if you work hard during your time, you would get a good LOR hopefully...

Thanks Umar Bhai, Medisid and all..for all the info and guidance.

God bless u..

About my profile, it was nothing special about it, just applied with step 1 score and all the necessary documents mentioned on their website . I guess timing of application is important, send atleast 4-5 months prior...rest it depends on luck also.

All the Best.

 Hi,

I am an intern in India,n have got an elective at Cornell however its a 1 month elective with 2 separate departments,2 weeks each, will that hinder the kind of Lor I get cause i ll be with a single department 4 only 2 weeks,(weekends are holidays)

Thanks a lot..;-)

I know many people who got multiple LORs in only one month as a result of the same schedule... so if you do well you might get good LORs from both departments... always remember its not the duration of electives that warrants you a good LOR... rather... a good performance!

hi umar bhai... ur website is of great help.. i have a few doubts.. pl consider them..

i got accepted for an elective at cornell in the month of feb.i have also applied to harvard for feb - march . i am waiting for the confirmation from harvard.. can u pls guide me what is a better option - 2 months at harvard, or  one month at cornell and is it feasible to do one month at cornell and other at harvard.. it would be a great help..

thanx in advnace

hi shalija

thanks for your kind words..... always remember its the specilaly which is more important as compared to university....a surgery elective in harvard wont help u much for medicine.... so I cannot really guide you on the basis of university.... in short, do electives in the specilaty of your choice or somewhat related to it...  having said so, it is easier to live at a place for 2 months rather than shifting after 4 weeks... so you are saved from hussle of shifting if u stay at a place for 2 months...

Hello Umar Bhai!

Hope you are in best of your health and spirits!

I wanted to ask that do clinical electives at a hospital with no IM residency but a FM residency count? Does the hospital lqualify as a teaching hospital for clerkships? Would the PD accept them as clerkships and true USCE?

Hi Swapnil

Thanks for your good wishes. It would be counted as a USCE. It does not matter if the hospital is a teaching hospital(with residency) or not... however electives in teaching hospital are considered more reputable and usually ONLY teaching hospitals have developed electives programs... having said so, it is always beneficial to have as much USCE as possible... Its a USCE as long as you are allowed to touch patients and examine them(not simply observe)...

Hi Umar,

How are you?How is life going on?I have been accepted for the month of May at MSKCC.My graduation is going to end on may 4th and my elective dates are from may 3rd to may 28.Will I face any problem,If VO stresses this point as there is only one day left for my graduation?

Can I go to visa with the print out of my mail acceptance. In MSKCC website, they mentioned "only email notifications".Or should I wait for any other  acceptance letter?

I already got rejected visitor's visa on nov,2008.I went along with my family for visa interview. My brother stays in USA and he completed his graduation at that time.We all applied to attend his graduation ceremony. But we were not given visa. What should I answer,If VO asks this point.

    Please reply.I am worried.

Hi visitor at MSKCC!

If possible can you get a letter from dean stating that you are graduating later on..............U can try writing the date of convocation as graduation date.........! Another option is that you can delay your internship now and complete it after returning from US.

Yes you can go with email printout of acceptance email. Also take a FAQ print out of that page where it says only email notifications will be given. Remember to have all printouts have footnotes of webaddresses where you downlaoded it from......

Always answer the truth that y were u going then and why were you rejected.........SMART CONFIDENT PROFESSIONAL be there like a dedicated medical student who has nothing on his mind other than his career.

Best Wishes.

Hi

m fine... congrats on your acceptance...

1. According to the best of my knowledge, your electives must START (NOT END) before your graduation...I might be wrong, better consult someone else as well...

2. Consult MSKCC elective co-ordinator... some places dont mail acceptance letter e.g NIH whereas some require original acceptance letter...

3. As far as I understand, your ties with US were stronger then. If VO asks you about it, simply tell whatever it is... no need to lie anything about anything...

Hi umar bhai

Lovely site..As per the site instructions i applied at NIH for an elective program next year in june ..i really worked around the system to get my application completed ..but the NIH ppl rejected the application in less than a day..and when i called and asked they said that the program is highly competitive. As i cant know what my dean wrote in my recommendation do u think it might be the reason for rejection as the letter was written by Deans PA not by the dean himself .

Hello umar bhai

I applied to NIH and got rejected .
Is it possible that i can apply again. Is there any minimum gap after which i can reapply. I really want to do a clerskhip there .

PLEASE NEED IMMEDIATE HELP!!

I need your immediate assistance on this matter.Presently I'm doing my internship from Motilal Nehru Medical college.Actually I have applied for the electives at weill cornell medical college, New York. I have already sent all the application material to the college but it has come to my notice that in the Dean's letter by my mistake it has been written that I have completed my Undergraduation (M.B.B.S.) instead of doing my undergraduation but in the official transcript it is written correctly. So presently I'm in a fix what to do?? Will it be fine to forward an e-mail to the college stating that the college registrar has informed me that there has been some error in the LOR sent and that the college authorities can cross check it with my  official transcript that I'm presently doing my internship and is expected to graduate in April 2011 and that a fresh rectified lor will be sent to them directly from the dean as soon as possible and ask for any other information I need to furnish. please help me.....

its ok, they wont even bother. they usually dont have time to read every single detail- dey never do. but you still dont want to take any chance, so easier and fast way can be to call the registrar, and explain the matter. and get the new LOR and scan send it in e-mail  to the elective coordinator as soon as u finish  talking to the coordinator on the phone. Mail is slow n people forget things within a few hrs so even though it  mailing may sound lyk its the right thing to do but its risky and there's a high chance that it'll go unnoticed.

if they will not accept e-mail then u can mail.

Thanx a lot!!

I  have sent an e-mail to the electives co-ordinator regarding  the error in Dean's Letter and My school Registrar has said that he will directly sent the letter by courier as soon as possible. Should I e-mail a scanned copy from my side too??

Need help people.. Urgent!!
The situation is that I have been accepted for a clerkship at Jefferson for the month of January (one month). Since I haven’t yet completed my internship and I am taking a break for step 1 and the clerkship, my internship extends to a point that by the time I get my degree and ECFMG certification it would be too late( probably November mid) to apply for 2011 match..
Now I since I can’t apply for 2011 match I might as well try and get do a clerkship for one more month. I will be applying to a few colleges for the month of February, but of course there’s no surety that I would be getting accepted at any of those. Now if I don’t wait for these colleges I can book my air tickets and schedule my CS exam now (which means lower fares and surety of exam date). But if I wait for replies from these universities to which I would apply now, God knows when would they respond and whether they would even accept me.. So if I wait for these univs, by the time I am able to book my air tickets, prices would be exorbitantly high and I might not get a CS date!!
Now I want to ask, is it worth doing another month of clerkship at this cost(financial and putting CS date at risk??)
If it is, I will wait and hope for a positive reply from these universities.. But if it really does not matter then I might as well book my tickets and exam date!!
Thanks for the help.

Obviously it counts... what makes you think so... even a letter from your home med school would also be considered.... if u meant "considered for residency application" by "counts"... Umar Bhai

I have sent my application to NIH with all the required documents. I wanted to participate in research in Psychiatry. My  Dean and HOD of Psychiatry did send a LOR for me through the application. I have a good CV as I  did a lot of researches in my college specifically in Psychiatry and do also have an international publication.

I received a mail yesterday from Vicki Malik that as I have not completed core clerkships in all the 5 subjects-med,surg,paeds,OBG and Psy, "I am holding your TOEFL score report with me till you send me your revised transcript in coming months".

I am currently in my 9th sem of my final year.I have completed 24 weeks of med, 26 of surgery, 10 of paeds, 18 of OBG and 2 of Psych.I think it is more than what they require.I dont have any more clerkships left in MED,PAEDS and PSY.So did she wanted me to do?If I complete all of it, I wont be a final yr student anymore. Or was it because in the grades column of application,I mentioned Medicine, surgery, paeds, etc, etc currently in progress. So should I send her my marks when I pass my final yr.in December??Or was she rejecting me??but she told she'll be holding my TOEFL scoresheet.

I am really depressed as I put a lot of hard work in pulling through my application.

Thank you

Yes because you mentioned that your core clerkships are currently in progress, this is why you need to send a confirmation from your institution's office that you indeed have completed the "stated number of weeks" in all the required core clerkships. NIH wants all your required core clerkships to be fully completed before considering your application.

I would be grateful if u help me out in this regard. I had applied for electives in Weill Cornell and Harvard in the months of November- Dec, January. A couple of days back I got a mail from cornell that due to limited seats ,you are not accepted. Have not got any mail from Harvard yet. I am totally disappointed. I am about to give my Step 1 on 1st of Nov.I haven't given TOEFL.I am currently doing my internship in India and will graduate next year in April. What shud I do? I want to do an elective desperately coz they help in getting a competitive residency.

Do v have to fill the CORI form as well  in our application to Harvard?

i called them up n they said that every1 has to fill it , in that case whose signatures should be taken in the end ?

or i can send the application without sending that form as well

Bhai dis is really testing my patience. Since Emory requires a sponsor, I started mailing every Int medicine faculty member at Emory since May 2010. Finally I managed 2 secure 1 in July end (after at least 400-500 mails). Getting him convinced took another 1 n half month and then he finally forwarded his document expressing his interest to sponsor me to the university about 2 weeks back. I was relieved that at last my elective was secured. Now, the university has sent me an application form and guideline letter... The letter states that International students no longer require a sponsor!! they hav 2 go thru routine application process! And when I mailed the application wid documents, they hav asked 2 wait for another 3 months to know if I am accepted!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Should I tear my hair apart or is this plain bad luck??? What do i do next?? Plz help!!

your best bet will be to give a call to the elective coordinator and explain that to him/her about your specific situation. Your case is different from the norm. Make sure you satisfy the other requirementts like Step1 etc. Tell them that you have been waiting for so long. And incase you are really interested in pursueing your elective with the sponsor, then Explain that to the elective coordinator as well that you have already contacted the attending/sponsor and it should not take time.

It will also not be unwise to write an e-mail to your sponsor, after discussing that with the elective coordinator. So that he can help expedite the process!

thanks buddy! ... lets c wat happens.. i jus hope I get approved yaar... been researchin dis elective thing for more than a year now!... will be dam heartbroken if i dont get 1! lets hope for d best! neway, thanks a lot!

Hello Umar Bhai

First of all thank you so very much for creating all this awareness and helping all of us. May Allah fulfill all your wishes. I had a couple of queries:

1. Considering that in pakistani government institutions we barely have time during 5th year to go out on a clinical rotation...what do you think is the ideal time? Can we go at the end of fourth year?

2. Most of the universities off clinical placements for 4-5 weeks as per their applications. Can we extend this period?

3. I intend to take Step 1 next june Inshallah during my fourth year and then apply and go early in fifth year. Is this suitable?

Thanks for your kind words.

1. You can do research electives in 4th year but not clinical electives. Most people go either during final year or before the graduation/ final year result.

2. Depends upon the program!

3. If you can manage it, then it is great!

Hi Umar Bhai! I am studying in Final Year Mbbs in chennai, India, and am about to write my final yr exams in a month. I have already written step 1 and TOEFL too. I am faced with a small problem right now. I have already gone through the electives compendium and listed out all the universities that accept IMGs, and also listed out all the courses I wish to do my electives in. Now, I am unable to decide which universities to apply to. I have no knowledge about which colleges are better to do electives in. I am well prepared to apply to any of them at the earliest date of application, but I think it will be a waste of money and time to apply to each of them and see which one i get. Will you please guide me in this regard? I wish to do an elective in Emergency surgery as first choice or any other surgical field as seconds. Any guidance will be very appreciated. Btw, your website ROCKS!!! Will be waiting for your reply. Thanking you, Terence

Thanks a lot for your kind words. It is totally upto you! People generally have different preferences... some people love to live in places like NY, IL, CA etc... some prefer to live with their relatives, so they apply to nearby universities, few go for all the top-ranked universities, some people apply to places with less fees.... so it is totally upto you to make your decision based on your preferences!

Thank you Umar Bhai!

I guess I'll just go apply to whichever I feel is better. And one more thing; Do I stand a realistic chance of getting a Surgical field for an elective and later for residency? I heard that all the Americans will be going for those too. Or am I being too ambitious in trying for them?

Will be waiting for your reply.

Thanking you,

Terence

Dear Umar Bhai

I got accepted for an elective at Yale in emergency medicine. I wanted to know what they could expect from me in that one month and what should I do to get a good LOR from the same.

Help would be appreciated

You should try to be good at history-taking, examtinations, making d/ds especially manners and rapport with patients... u present 3-4 cases everyday... u wud have a new attending every single day and you should try to impress every single one of them as ur aggregate evaluation is done on the basis of evaluation reports that you get signed by each attending everyday! At the end, one of the two designated medical education consultants, write a letter if you have done well... looking at your daily evaluations from various attendings.

hi. Congrats on your good toefel scores. well its a very competitive program even a 27 on speaking dosent Guarantee  a spot.Even people with TEOFEL scores of > 110 have been rejected.Try in the departments you are interested in after confirming some   how which are the branches that that are currently open somehow. If u have a good CV , a goo Cover letter you might just get lucky. Also previous research experience helps a lot! Good luck :)

Hi. Well one is tht you can email Malik Vikki asking her a couple of Deptt and the respective months that you are opting for.She will most probably tell you about the availability but at the same time warn you tht an open slot dosent mean tht ur in as they have many applications. Then u will assesses tht do u have a go or should you go for other months and branches. The other way is if u have a friend whos been there , or get in touch with some ones whos doin the elective there currently then you can ask him to guide you through.Good luck

Hie,

I am a final yr student in India, have started with internship since march. I need to know.. what all should be considered when choosing your 'month' of application. I mean because the temperatures there are very low, most of us cant tolerate it.. it wouldnt be wise if one goes there and falls sick .. so is it like.. we should reconsider applying in winter months. But, I heard that its easy to get an elective during winter. How much does this affect your chances to get elective?

hi friends
last few days i have been searching if an indian medical student could do an elective in his final year when he hasnt given his final exams(med , surgery, gynec). While most of my friends said u could do, i found a web site saying u cant do it if you are in your final year in india .. u need to be in your internship( coz internship is needed for your graduation ) check it ur self ... i am sending the site link
http://www.tsdocs.org/USMLE/electives.htm (USE PAGE UP AND DOWN BUTTON TO SCROLL)

and pls DONT fully belive this site ... but someone pls throw some light into the topic .. hope this helps

Hi Ajay

I discussed the issue with the management of this website... Naeem bhai... who happens to be a friend...

Some Indian medical graduate might be able to give a better opinion but as far as I know, it is the same; one has to be in his last year of graduation(internship year in India) for clinical electives at most US universities... few of the US universities require you to be in pre-internship year and dont consider internship year as the last year of medical school while others consider internship year as last year of medical school... so it is somewhat variable depending upon the university you apply to... if anyone can add something further to it, please comment on it! Thanks!

Hi Ajay and Umar

This topic has been discussed time and again. If the requirement is LAST YEAR OF GRADUATION, it means Internship in India. There are a few universities however, which accept the students if they are in the pre-internship year (which is known as the final year in India), but such universities mention specifically that only those students can apply who are still in their pre-internship year. So you stard absolutely right Umar.. If however some website is has not mentioned this specifically, and there are any doubts, one interested should contact the elective coordinator of that university and ask for clarification. Email or phone, whichever is convenient. And Ajay, even if you email them they are pretty quick and accurate.:)

Hi Umar Bhai,

Hope u are well. I happy to inform you that I got accepted for 2 electives at UNC. One is General Surgery and the other is in Pulmonology. Could have never got it without your guidance.

I was just wondering if you could give me some pointers about what to do to prepare myself for this, and about what to expect at the elective.

Any kind of help will be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Sam
