Research in Non-Relevant Specialty

By Non-Relevant field I mean.. if you plan to apply in Internal Medicine then fields like General Surgery, Orthopaedic Surgery, Pathology are non-relevant for you. If you plean to apply in Surgery then fields like Cardiology, Rhematology, Hematology are non-relevant for you.

It is always advisable to have research exprience in the specialty of your choice; research experience in your specialty of choice helps you greatly not only during residency interviews but also during fellowship interviews.

But if you dont find research in the specialty of your choice than you can always try doing research in some non-relevant specialty. Always remember if there is not a disadvantage of something....there is always some advantage...obviously your research is better than no research....although it would have been better if it had been in the specialty of your choice but there is nothing like 'useless' in the professional world....every achievement/ hard work does pay back sooner or later....

so whatever you can get...grab that opportunity and learn to convert half chances to complete ones....always remember....every experience in life teaches a useful lesson for the future experiences of life....so they are not wasted...they carry the same importance as your school carried for your college and your college carried for ur medical college... nothing is useless....never run away from any experience....grab whatever you can get and then have faith in yourself and your hard work....always remember.....chances are not available....they are always....and if you find one...dont miss it....and if you made use of one....never regret it, it can never be 'useless'! Go for everything u can get....best of luck!

hello umar, its good to see your work in making your site vast and better
 i am himanshu from india.
ok  i have a query regarding a research:
i got research in microbiolgy "prevalence of pseudomas aeruginosa in post op wounds in our college" and it is expected to publised this year in" journal of infectious disease and antimicrobial agents" Thailand.
1. umar as i am applying for INTERNAL MEDICINE is this paper helpfull?
2. journal mentioned is indexed or not?
3. this is the only research paperv i did in my college is this sufficient or not?

 thanks for reply..........
i wanted to know
1. as this is microbiolgy research can this be helpfull in IM resedency........
2. if the journal is not listeb in pubmed than?
acctually i am not able get information from pubmed can u please check it out..........

I believe
1. definitely...why not!
2. hmm...check out the research without publication section...
just search the name of journal in pubmed.org....it would be there if its a peer reviewed journal...
well sounds good...kar lo!

 umar,
1. i asked that the journal is not indexed in pubmed but is indexed in many other databases.i have already sent you the list, so i wanted to know, according to you whats the journal's status can these be shown in cv? i.e. copying the list of databases which index this journal.
2. ok also tell me how to describe the reseach work done and publication in CV? should we specify that journal is indexed or not,and is indexed where? for ex in my CV i have written....    CO-AUTHORED A RESEARCH PAPER IN MICROBIOLOGY:  “Prevalence of Pseudomonas ................................................”
This paper is supposed to be published in volume (issue) 2 of “Journal of Infectious Diseases and Antimicrobial Agents” this year (2009). ..................what else according to you should be added to this?
PLEASE REPLY I WILL WAIT...........
BYE TAKE CARE

I am sorry I dont know the answer to your question...the opportunity sounds good...but I dont know more about it...probably ask an expert or someone better...
You can add it to your CV in the reference format...

 Umar,
  1. tell me whether you indicate that journal is indexed or not in CV ?
 2. also, you meant this              "Kolmos, H.J., R.N. Svendsen et al. The surgical team as a source of post-operative wound infections. J. Hosp.Infect.; 35:207-214." This kinda reference format should be used to discribe resreach and publication ?
 3. do you have any idea that doing certification " professional diploma in clinical research (PDCR) " is good idea? if yes how can this be helpful in CV or Residency?
bye and tc............

1. I don't think so...
2. Exactly.... this is the best way...... to the best of my knowledge.....
3. I am sorry, I haven't heard about it before so I am not sure if I can give you an advice on it...
tc and best of luck!

 Umar,
 1. as i have already told you abt my paper and publication..........tell me how it can help in interviews...........
 2. also as i told you that it is in microbiology and i am interested in IM so you will categorise it it as a research in non relevant field?
 3. also how will you categorise whether it is Long term or short term?

 1. acctually  data collection took abt an year............
 2. also i asked you how it will help in interviews?
 3. as i was under a professor i.e. co author how will this thing affect the interview my name is third in the list of authors?

1. its long term if u have been working on it for an year
2. definitely, it would help u for interviews...
3. being 1st author is the best...but even then having your name in a paper is the best thing..

hey

i have a research paper completed, but i dont know anyone who can edit my paper. i'm not sure where to publish it either. some journals, like BMJ, have aga khan students paper published but i've checked their fees, and they are way to much for an undergrad paper publication. do you know of any well established journals?

thanks greatly appreciate it

 Hi ,

I am interested in doing general surgery residency. I have an opportunity to do research in breast cancer.

And it is regarding the receptors on the tumor cells.

Will it be helpful to improve my chances of getting into GS ?

Thank you
