Hi.. What are the pros and cons of trying for an elective in the UofToronto? Esp in Peds, considering SickKids (of the same Univ) is one of the good hospitals for Pedatrics.

Is doing an elective there considered USCE??

Thanks

1. pros...its a very good place...

2. cons....I dont know of any...might be the Canada factor...but I dont think it matters...

3. yes its considered to be USCE....or somewhat similar to it...

what is the best time to apply for electives/as in which months r the least busiest and AMG applications are the least?

well I cant really say that...becz it does not matter if u r accepted somewhere in the busiest months.... or if u r not accepted anywhere in the so called free months, anyhow I think most of US students do extramural electives in summers and dec, so they might be regarded busy months....but it does not matter... you can get a place if ur luck helps.....tc and best of luck!

i had a doubt..

what does this mean"all core clerkships must be completed"

ALL clinical rotations in all dptmts

OR

one of the rotations in each core clerkship?

"core clerkships" means the main surgery, medicine, paeds, gynae-obs electives that you complete at your home medical school... it means that you have completed your elective rotations of all these specialties... usually what we do in 3rd, 4th year in Pakistan, India etc.... tc n best of luck!

sir.

for application to yale, what shud be written under

1.no of patients seen in physical diagnosis/can we write nay no/

2.i don rem dates when i d taken hep n varicella shots...but my titres r psotive..so can i jus leave thst blank n attach blood titre reports/

3.my sop >25o words..is that ok?its arnd 1000words..its impossiblw to fit it in 250 words...

4.i dont have proof for tetanus vaccn..n they are not even asking for one..jus date they want &dose...i don rem what dose it was...what is it normally?

 1. whatever is the number of patients you see.... you can write any number of patients you see....

2. I think so.... titers are always more important than dates of shots...

3. It has to be in 250 words....... not more than that....

4. I dont know... ask some pedeatrician.....

tc n best of luck!

SUNY states...........
as step 1 n TOEFL scores as preapproval items.
pre approval required item that must be submitted.........at the same time mentioning 'if available' the registrar replied by just referring to this weblink. no answer to my query.
http://sls.downstate.edu/registrar/visiting/international/documents/Intl...

as for MSSM..........
the first page in this info book for IMGs lists that..check it out. abt TOEFL update
http://www.mssm.edu/students/handbook/electives/pdf/forvisit_info.pdf
----------------------------------------

u didnt reply so i think this is the best place to add this update.........
U Wisconsin also needs sponsor in all depts except Psych..........i THINK(not sure) i read it on elective details catalog.
Rochester has now stringent TOEFL requirements like>100total and >25 almost in each section.
UCSF radio replied saying that they are  not accepting Int'l students till further policy meeting and decision.
tough luck for us......
anyways will add more info asap.
best wishes to all n me

hi medisid, thanks for your input.... as far as suny downstate link is concerned, I am myself confused because at the top they say......all documents must be submitted in order to have your application reviewed... and then at the bottom they say.... TOEFL report if available.... I think both TOEFL and Step 1 are now required for SUNY... plz confirm it from the elective co-ordinator and lemme know....

As far as MSSM is concerned, I agree they require TOEFL from now onwards...

I have already updated UCSF info... this is the most updated info provided by UCSF elective co-ordinator.... they are not accepting international students who dont have a visa...

For all the other universities, I am sorry I cannot update until or unless you provide the relevant link...

Thanks a lot for all the info... you have been a valuable contributor... tc n best of luck!

Umar bhai plz guide me

I am doing my internship from indira gandhi medical college, nagpur, india. Ours is a Government Medical College with considerable repute in our state.

It happened so that 3 of my collegues had sent application to SUNY. But SUNY rejected their application stating that 'Instructional facility of your medical college cant be verified online'!! Well the name of our medical college even appears on the WHO list given in the new SUNY form itself! We mailed them regarding this and also other links of our college on the net.. But they are not replying at all. We kept mailing for almost 10 days but got no reply! When contacted on phone, they either directly disconnect or ask us to wait for valid response via mail... Even after telling that our mails arent being replied, they ask us to wait for mails. Should i completely leave hopes of SUNY??? Im trying at other places too but SUNY is d cheapest and best :(

well swapnil... I am sorry I have never heard of any situation like this so I cant give you any valuable suggestion and I dont want to misguide you.... the only advice I can give you is keep on trying and also apply in some other places... take care and best of luck!

Umar bhai i have many doubts. I am writing to name of the university and the doubt below it.writing in this format so that every1 is benefited if they have same queries.

1. NORTHSHORE -

The online application link for online application is not working. kindly check and please tell me where to look for it.

2.ROCHESTER -

a.What is meant by repatriation insurance which is required by them?

b.My deans letter mentions that i was a student of good standing in it.Do i need to get a separate letter or will the deans letter do?

c.What is meant by completed conformation form of  J1/F1 visa? this is also required by this uni.

d.The first line of deans letter, '   The student (will) (will not) be covered by basic ambulatory health care.  If not covered, the student must carry The University of Rochester’s health care at approximately $30.00 per month.  Malpractice insurance (does) (does not) cover the student while away from this school.  The student (will) (will not) pay tuition at this school during the extramural period.  Academic credit toward the M.D. degree (will) (will not) be awarded upon the receipt of a passing grade.  An evaluation of this elective (will) (will not) be required.'

I did not understand which options i should choose for all the options 'will or will not'?

3.NIH -

a.In the form in the state column they hav mentioned to write N.A for foreign students.should i write N.A in the postal code column too?

b.We don't hav GPA nd grading in our college.they ask for that.what to mention?

vaibhav... I wont be able to answer all your queries but I would try my level best to answer them to the best of my abilities....

1. I searched but could not find it myself.....

2.

a. no idea

b. I dont think so....

c. no idea

d. well it varies from school to school but I would change it according to my school for you.... so that you have an idea...

The student (will not) be covered by basic ambulatory health care.  If not covered, the student must carry The University of Rochester’s health care at approximately $30.00 per month.  Malpractice insurance (does not) cover the student while away from this school. The student (will) pay tuition at this school during the extramural period.  Academic credit toward the M.D. degree (will) be awarded upon the receipt of a passing grade.  An evaluation of this elective (will) be required.'

In short this means that your medical school does not provide you a health insurance and malpractice insurance; you would be paying fees at your college during electives and you would get credit for elective if an evaluation form is submitted at the end of elective.

3.

a. You can write your postal code.

b. I mentioned my scores.

tc n best of luck!

Thank u bhai, i knew u would do ur best to answer my queries and i am happy with ur responses.. Few of the remaining queries i will clear with the E.C of the respective university.

Some information for students applying for electives -

1.If u have problems like the no. of copies of originals u have are limited u can get the copies attested from ur college official wit the seal of college office.and if ur getting ur transcript attested then u have to have ur college seal on every page of transcript.

2.For tufts they have mentioned in the form that step 1 scores be mentioned.when i mailed the E.C he replied me that step 1 is not mandatory.

3.Direct link for cornellhttp://med.cornell.edu/international/for_int_stu/index.html?name1=International+Health+Interest+Group&type1=2Active

4.updated link for Northwesternhttp://www.feinberg.northwestern.edu/AWOME/Visiting_Students

5.We all have doubts as to which time is the best to apply.i am using words from a universities website with slight modification.( hope this helps but remember this is just to help n as umar bhai said no one can tell when is the best time to take apply for electives.) -

a.Spaces are on a first-come, first served basis, and spots are limited (most of the places).

b.Visiting students are placed only after our University Students are scheduled.

c.Spaces in General Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, and Surgery are extremely limited, but sub-specialties have more availability(this is in northwestern)

d. Summer months are extremely full. Our acceptance rate for 2008-2009 was 70%(northwestern).so apply in winter or spring.

note- for this u have to know what months are winter and spring in U.S. i know the answer but i want u to find out.bcoz everything cannot be spoon fed.if even after searching u have doubts u can surely ask. :)

e. To increase your chances of being placed, you should include the full amount of possible dates and list elective choices across multiple departments.

ALL THE BEST TO ALL . AND GOD BLESS UMAR BHAI.

One small request-those who have got selected by universities can mention in brief which all universities they applied for n which all were they selected in.This way we will get to know the general acceptance rates of various colleges.so less problems for our future applying friends.

thank u all..

umar

 1. The following universities has stopped accepting students for this academic year 2009-2010

 a.Uni. of Massachusettes

 b.Uni of Connecticut

2. Many students complain that most E.C's dont respond to your Emails. But believe me most of them do and are friendly. the only thing is they get a lot of mails so u should know how to write a mail. The tips i am mentioning here are my views.(so if anything is wrong umar bhai kindly correct it) -

a.Start with Dear ...........

b.Dont give your history there, they dont have time to read that.

c.Be short and to the point.

d.Be clear about your question.

e.And if u need clarifiction of  any info which is already on the website, dont forget to mention that u did not understand the info mentioned on website. If u dont mention this they will send u link to the same website which  is  waste of ur and their time.

f. Be polite when u mail them.Dont show that u are ordering them to respond.

Eg- i have seen students mailing in this way - 'i want to know is step 1 necessary? reply 'Yhis gives a bad impression.

the correct way may be- 'i would like to know whether step 1 is mandatory? kindly reply

                                                 thanking u in anticipation.'

HOPE THE GUIDELINES HELP.

ALL THE BEST TO ALL.

AND AS ALWAYS 'GOD BLESS U UMAR BHAI'

dear sir,

its very astonishing to know this site and find it very useful esp for people like me who have no much idea of how to get  there .but questions is how much financially should be sound to stay in US after passing steps with  good marks with 6 reaerch papers until get residency.if s.one is national of pakistani origin but  financially weak ,is it possible 2 get visa and stay in US with all above criteria .(USMLE step 1 &2 Ck with 97 and 7 papers papers in orthopedic surgery.

hi sam, thanks a lot for your kind words...... well regarding finances it varies from person to person... it can be anything in between $500 to $2500... ur credential look pretty impressive... why dont u try for a paid research spot for few years before residency.. tc n best of luck!

Dear Umar

Hello..
I am a final year medical student from India.

First of all, I would like to thank you for the help and guidance provided by your website to all USMLE aspirants. I have been a regular follower of the website and it has smoothened things in a number of ways.

I am interested in Pediatrics residency. I have applied to multiple places for electives for Jan, Feb and March.

I came to know that you had done an elective at NIH in Hematology in 2007.

Even I got an acceptance e-mail from NIH in Hematology for January2010 and I am waiting for the institutional agreement from them. I wanted some advice about NIH since you have already been there.
  1. Did they provide you with any help with housing in Bethesda or you had to make your own arrangements. If so, please advise me about accomodation there.
  2. Also, what about LoRs? Do the attendings there write out LoRs for international students, given that its a premier research institute and we donot have much of a background of research in our home country? Would the elective prove to be fruitful as far as LoRs are concerned?
  3. Is there anything else that has to be taken special care of at NIH?
I am interested in a Pediatric residency

Please advise me as to which elective would be the better option ,in your opinion.

I value your opinion alot and look forward to it!!

Looking forward to your kind reply!

hi... thanks for ur kind words... I went to NIH in 2009 not 2007....

1. No.... I can get u in touch with my landlady.... in case u r interested!

2. Doesn't matter.... they want u to work hard... if u work well and impress them... u can get LORs.... I got 3 of them... they are very nice ppl!

3. Keep one thing in mind NIH is a big research institute with a small hospital, not a big hospital with attached research institute... so all the cases u see there r extremely complex, rare and complicated cases.... dont expect a simple easy rotation... every case is a potential publication...

4. Depends upon u..... but I really liked NIH and wud advise NIH to everyone...

5. Yup..... thats also... why I recommend NIH....

6. I dont think there is any problem with Infectious Diseases.... as electives specialty... depends upon u...

Dear umar bhai,

i need help with accomodation at NIH. How far was your place of stay from clinical center. Was it walking distance? Were you satisfied with it. I need it for February 2010. Actually I need to have some confirmation of place to stay before i go for visa interview. I dont want to take risk by not securing a place to stay before interview.

Can u introduce me to your landlady so that things get easier for me. There are so many of us going to NIH that this reply would be well sought after.

Best wishes!

hi medisid..... it was a pretty good place... it was not walking distance(2 miles) and I dont think u can find a cheap temporary housing place in walking distance of NIH... actually not even in Bethesda... reason? you would know when you go there... it is a very beautiful place and Bethesda is the city with most literate people in whole US... maximum no. of PhDs.... it is such a beautiful city but expensive housing... you can live in Silverspring, Kensington, Wheaton which are nearby Bethesda but Wheaton is not very safe though....

I dont see distance as a problem in places like San Francisco, New York, Bethesda where they have extrememly good transport system of MUNI!

Contact Lidia Casasola lecx3@hotmail.com with my reference! She was extremely nice lady and also picks and drops you from station!

Thanks for your practical and seasoned advice, umar bhai.

1)What was the region where you stayed?

2)What was the rent(approx.)?

3) What are your views about that housing list put up on NIH website(was it thru that u got this room)?

Seems like, i'll be enjoying my time in Bethesda tryin to imbibe those educational surroundings

TIA (Thanks in Advance)

umar

 1. Kensington

2. I think somewhere $450-650... I am not sure though!

3. I don't remember it....

I hope you have a great time... when you go there... also visit Washington DC... esp Smithsonians and Bethesda Zoo... which are only 8 and 2 miles from NIH respectively....

With all due respect to Umar bhai.... i feel u should go in for paediatrics in Tufts since u r interested in paediatrics residency not I.M ...a sub internship in paedo will help u in paedo residency in future.. and u can try and get NIH dates changed to consecutive months or so..  it is just my suggestion which i felt like sharing.. Whatever it is Umar bhai is the best person to guide.. (bhai if u feel this comment is inappropriate plz dont post it.)

God bless Umar bhai

yes vaibhav... u r totally right.... I am sorry I overlooked that acceptance... in TUFTS.... I was comparing only the two... NIH and Mount Sinai!

Undoubtedly electives in the specialty of your choice anywhere... is the best option and according to this general rule... TUFTS is the best option... moreover it is a sub-internship... icing on the cake!!! thanks a lot for correcting me... there are so many comments to reply daily... so sometimes I overlook/ miss few sentences... but I am glad I have visitors like you vaibhav to correct/help me out...

Bhai ap mujhe sharminda kar rahe ho.......u r really very humble and down to earth bhai.. i m amazed.. GOD BLESS U...

And bhai u r the one helping every1 out.. i find gettin this electives stuff is so tough even after u hav this wonderful site.. i was thinkin how tough it must have been for u with no one to guide no info at all.. u must have really really worked hard to get an elective... and as a mark of respect and appretiation to the help u have given me and others thro this site , i will always try to help u out in whtever way possible....

And we all know how difficult it must be  to manage studies, this whole website all the queries and social life..

And bhai i guess u overlooked tufts coz i feel u had a great time at NIH which u cherish and this made u nostalgic and thts why u must have over looked that sentence... :)

thanks a lot vaibhav for your kind words..... I am flattered! well I had a great time in NIH... actually they are very nice ppl... actually Vicki, their Elective Co-ordinator was very helpful and supportive...

Dear Umarbhai,

Thanks a million for being so kind as to start this blog!

Now, I have a very peculiar problem, which is one of the reasons why i am deferring my plans to appear for USMLE.

It may appear a bit ridiculous to you for me to ask this, but i have a very long beard and i am afraid the officials, examiners and the universities may reject my applications just on this basis. I also am not very keen on compromising on my convictions, and this is the dilemma i am in.

So have you had any such experience, or do you know whether they biased abt these issues.

Pleas help.

Thanks a lot.

Wish you a very happy diwali!

Hi Teja, thanks a lot for your kind words! Honestly speaking I don't think there is any such problem or any likelihood of you facing such problem according to the best of my knowledge and experience. Discrimination and prejudice is everywhere in the world... but according to me, it is not that widely prevalent in the professional life in US... or any career life in US... happy diwali!

Umar bhai I have a few queries… please answer as many as possible …counting on u.

                                                                         1.Northwestern University-

                                           a.  In their health record form there is a Student ID no. What no. should we fill there?

                                           b. Will I be enrolled as half time or full time student.. which option I should select?

                                    2.Brown Alpert-

                                           a. In their form tere is a column called ‘title of clerkship’ … what shd I fill in there.

Next columns are ‘speciality’ where they have mentioned in bracket eg medicine, surgery etc .

and next column is of  ‘no. of weeks’.. so what shd I fill in column ‘title of clerkships’?

                                    3. Suny downstate-

                                         a. the is a column wher they r askin start of medical school date n end date..

I have taken extention of  internship so do I hav to mention tht?  And wht reason do I state if asked?

                                     4. Harvard –

                                          a. Standard length of time to complete MD program: ___________ years.

What to fill in that space bhai..? MD program?                                                                                                                               Bhai sorry to post this post 3 times.. there was sme problem with the display of queries

bh

 bha

1. a No idea, probably ur college's student id

b. where? u r a full-time student in ur college

2. a. title of your clerkship, like Psychiatry, Paeds etc. (refer to http://umartariq.com/index.php?q=node/128)

3. mention the new extended date... reason....??? you are taking some time off to get extra credits by doing electives in US

4. the number of years of your MBBS program... I guess it is 6 in your case and 5 in Pakistan.

4) Indian MBBS program is 5-1/2 years long(including 1 yr internship)

what i wrote there was:

striked out MD like this by a single line; wrote MBBS there and for length 5-1/2 yrs( including 1 yr internship). MY Student Office Incharge was reluctant to sign without writing that 1 yr internship statement.

3) As for Expected date of graduation. I wrote my own stipulated date when I wouild return from USA and complete my remnant internship here, and that would be mentioned on my College Leaving Certificate.

1) Student ID i left blank.

2) Sure 'full time student' thats what electives are : 'Training and involvement in a US medical school as par with any of its own'

Dear Vaibhav

This is the link http://www.jefferson.edu/oies/ . Click on "Medical Students interested in rotations/electives". They will give you the registrar's e-mail and you have to send in a request. They will send you the application material. They are pretty fast. Also it is a tough task finding this page! It took me a lot of time to find it out!

Hope this helps

Sincerely,

Bhai i have posted a few queries a day back.. please reply to them... and one mre query.. In the yale form- i am applying for 2 electives.. so should i mention 2 choices for the no 1. and 2 choices for no. 2? or only one choice in each? - below is the thing in which i have to fill the dates and choices... hope ur getting my question.. for eg. in choices blank (1)should i fill a.cardiology b.gastroenterology (2 choices) or just (1) cardiology (one choice) Elective Choices: (1)___________(2)_______ List a maximum of two choices in order of preference. Dates desired: (1)_________ (2)__________ I am applying for: [ ] One elective [ ] Two electives

lective
Choices: (1)_Cardiology_ (2)_Gastroenterology_
List a maximum of two choices in order of preference.
Dates desired: (1)_________ (2)__________(fill them according to Yale Block Calendar dates)

I am applying for:
[ ] One elective
[x] Two electives

And bhai North western requires us to send toefl via ETS .. so if i send it now in how many days will it reach the college appx? and if it reached before my application will it remain in thier records? or will it be discarded?

it takes 3-10 days but dont worry... it is never discarded... they save your application or result... whichever comes first.... to wait for the other...

Thank u for the valuable info...

One more query.. most of the forms are in pdf  format in which we cannot type in anything.. And they ask us to type or print in the form.. So is it ok if we convert the form to word file fill it and send? If not ok what should i do? plz suggest....

Hello vaibhav,

You can convert to those pages in which there are much writing to do and you are short of space, like i pointed out in PS page of northwestern. But doing so in the application form would create a lot of trouble as pdf----> word is a tedious process, plus you could risk lose important formats or columns. That was why i did not do it. If you are able to write clearly and legibly then that would be fine with the form. Remember, to impart neatness to your application form. If possible do attach a cover single page on top of all application packet neatly stating your enclosures, pages and total # of pages. This would impact and help the elective official in filing and checking your form and ease her burden.(We, the ppl from this subcontinent have started sending so much elective applications from the last 1-2 years that they would really be surprised and burdened by them).

Best Wishes.

by the way: u look nice in that pic!

Haha ya they are obviously shocked to see so many people apply from India and Pakistan.  .

And once again thanks for the valuable information. And yes i will remember to enclose the things u mentioned. That would really give a good impression.

And  thank u for the compliment on my pic.

God bless u and All the best to u too

No vaibhav havnt applied to any college... i havn startd collecting my documnts yet! Too budy wid my final yr xams! will giv my toefl in january n den strt wid d documentation..lookin 2 apply somewher between sept 2010- feb 2011.. the thng is i m not applying to institutes wid (exhorbitant) tuition fees... so yale, harvard, brown etc. are definitely out.. plus i dun hav USMLE step1... so my choices are limited.. but in any case NIH, Rochester, UCSD, U Conn are on my priority list (for IM or its subspecialities) considering their decent ranking.. with LIJMC n maimonedes as back-ups. how are u going abt it??? lookin for ur (and as always Umar bhai's) guidance...

PLZ HELP!

well... in short, I don't recommend making any changes to the forms in pdf version. It increases their work if they have to see changed forms. If you can fill it without altering spaces, then that is fine otherwise not....

Pertaining to the query on the .pdf issue,I suggest you use Adobe pro (the 300 mb version)will do.

its just takes some time to download n learning to use it takes like 10 mins.

But it is the best software to fill out pdf files.

remember, other American and international students are applyin with you n def if ur form looks extremely professional u will get the upper  hand

Hope my suggestion helps u all.

They will never discard your application. I have had one of the best experience with Northwestern. My friend had forgot to fill in his details in its health statement, and just provided one PS for his 1st choice. They emailed asking him to resend completely filled health statement and to provide two more Personal Statements regarding 2nd choice and 3rd choice. So they are pretty meticulous about these things and really care about your 100$ fees. Plus if you dont get scheduled they said on application brochure that they'll return 50$ back.

The spaces in the form for writing PS in northwestern is small and printing there would be pretty tricky. What i did was copy-pasted the whole format from pdf application to word and then wrote n adjusted my PS in the middle space and printed and signed it. It looked NEAT than handwritten or printed over.

Best wishes

Bhai i had called up Suny downstate university to ask about OSHA site... the person connected to someone and she said we are not accepting students any more.and that we are full till 2011. Do i not send the form? or should i take my chances and send the form anyway? please guide me bhai.. I am having a tough time..

Hi vaibhav.

You have rely on what they say! Even though I found it rather difficult to digest as vacancy in 2011 is  to be decided at the most earliest by beginning of its session(ie. apr 2010). Must be someone with a prejudice against IMGs. I know they just send an automated reply with the electives webpage info to every email response. I think call them up again to confirm! Personally I didnt apply there  even though i had all the docs ready, coz of that step1 etc as pre-application essentail items.  Did u look up the elective availability slots that were available after the SUNY students scheduled their electives. Its in a pdf file on the electives catalog page. its given month-by-month, site-by-site. But they must have been filled by us IMGs now. even though its worth taking a look.

Call them again I wud say! Lets wait for Umar bhai's response.

Hey pal thank u for the advice.... i guess i will apply anyway and will also give one more call.. one of my friend told me many student cancell their electies so even if there is no vacancy now one may be created when some 1 cancells.. so i will apply anyway... i did check their catalog... i went thro everythin.. my dates are ready everythin is ready except for OSHA..

thank u again.. God bless u and umar bhai..

Thank u bhai and medisid..

I got a mail from Brown alpert and North shore that they are not accepting students..  the Alpert application fees is 100$ bhai.. Should i send in that application too? i will be forwarding u the mails i got from the respective elective co ordinators to ur email id.

so that u can go through them...

thank u bhai.....

@dr andy; so sorry to hear that u have limited options. and for other's eye too

But i have a good news! there is one more free place for you! MSKCC

Or the MEMORIAL SLOAN KETTERING CANCER CENTER.  its a constituent hospital of Weill Cornell but it charges no tutition fees unlike weill cornell. but there is a separate application 100$ fees. MSKCC is the most reputed hospital for cancer in the world.............( i am not kidding!) Plus they have 2 seats in an elective called 'SubInternships for International Medical Students' plus 1 seat for IMGs in few electives. NOW thats what we shud call 'IMG friendly'

TIPS........in PS do express your ultimate desire 'to know about cancer' these ppl are totally head over heels in cancer and want similar medical students. They are very competitive. Visit the link below

http://www.mskcc.org/mskcc/html/2638.cfm

Best wishes!

Thnk u soooooooooooooooo much medisid for d valuable info u'v given me!!!

umar bhai,

thanks a lot for guidance through your website,

i have an cardiology elective in weill cornell, which is clashing with my subinternship in medicine in louisville by one week that is the wc elective ends on 12 th feb (it is a 2 wk + 2 wk elec, irregular dates) and louisville one starts on5th feb.i really want to do both electives, and dont want to cancel either ( i tried fr 3 mnths  to geta sponsor in louisville).wc ppl hav nothin else to offer.

is it possible for me to get a LOR in 3 weeks, seek permission frm da wc faculty and leave wc elec 1 wk before, would that reflect badly on my USCE.

please guide.

yes u can... as far as I know.... becz I also did it once... but inform the Weil Cornell faculty asap... and apologize in advance... also offer them starting one week early or making up for the one week at any suitable time... moreover tell them politely that you are also ready to come on weekends and work late till night.. shows you are really eager... and gives a good impression!

With warm regards umarbhai,

I am in a dilemma. Of all the colleges that I applied so far from the list of your website I have been approved only at Tufts Medical Center, Boston in Feb,2010 and that too for cardiothoracicsugery subinternship. Now the dilemma is that I have got a field in surgery, that too not general surgery, not medicine (which i choiced first) but in cardiothoraic surgery and people say surgery is next to impossible for getting into a residency for a nongreencard img like me ( a fact which I was not so much aware of at the time I applied to electives in hurry and filled my choices in ), while at the same time I dont personally feel to reject the offer of SUBINTERNSHIP given the fact that its the only elective offer I have so far.So is it worth spending 2500$ for the tuition fee ( I do have financial constraints to look after) , how far it would help me in my future application in residency for surgery or even medicine (surgical elective for medicine!) and are there any other place left to apply for medical elective now considering that most of them are full for march 2010 when my internship ends.

                                             Please help me out.....

hi saurabh... seems like a good opportunity... I would recommend you to go for this sub-internship... moreover visit the following link to learn how you can get into surgery...

http://umartariq.com/index.php?q=node/101

http://umartariq.com/index.php?q=node/62

P.S. it is not impossible to get into surgery... I know many ppl who did so... few of them contributed in the above mentioned webpage...

Hey Saurab.. u can do as Umar bhai suggested or i would suggest u one more option.. just my personal suggestion.. u have to think for urself .. look into ur constraints n take the decision.. u said ur internship ends in march.. What i have done is i have taken a few months of extension for my internship.. so that i can do electives. u can do the same n apply for april may june ... in Internal medicine.. in case u get accepted u can go for it cme back complete ur internship.. else u can also go ahead with ur sub internship.. depends on u..

Hope it helps..

God bless Umar bhai...

dude..

i was in the same situ as yours 3-4 mnths back...bliv me u'v come 2 d ultimate place to kno d who-what-when-how of electives...

START by thoroughly reading the 'Electives' section in this site... it will hardly take 2-3 days to do so...u will get a clear picture of what electives is all about, including the places to apply, cost factor, to the minutest details....then u can place ur doubts here... n m sure Umar bhai is always der 2 help n so r v..

all d best!

Hey Medisid  when did u apply to northwestern? what field and what period?.... they mentioned that do not send in applications more then 6 months in advance...even if i send them like 5.5 months before...by the time it is processed and everything months remaining are aboout 4 to 4.5 months which for a competitive college like nw is late??

Sincerely,

-Purav

Hi purav.

They received my applixn on 30ish sep and got the reply on 16th oct.  since they are very peculiar about only 3 choices. i stated 1.gasto; 2.hem/onc; 3rads.(backup).....i got into rads for jan.........periods: dec>jan>mar>april........

yes it so happens, but you are only apparently late. realtively with other applicants you are with time. so dont worry.

one advice is when u apply do state your acceptances in tufts, sinai, yale in the respective section.(have u done or planning to do US electives?? i think on page 2)   it will matter to them that u got acceptances from good places.

hope it helps. Best Wishes

thanks a lot bro!! Keep up the good work!!!

does doing elective in a university hospital, other than NY(EMORY) count more or doing it in new york in a community hospital counts more for future residency in NY???

 Hi Umar bhai

1)I  applied 11 months advance of my elective start date in Yale. They denied me the seat saying "not enough space to accommodate you." This time they also started application processing late ( just 3 months in advance ) unlike last year. What could be the reason for my rejection? Should I ask them?

I called Tuft before applying, they said " unfortunately your college is not in our list, so dont waste your time and energy in applying". But my college is in WHO list.

2)I have applied in john hopkins too. Is their any way I can increase my chances of acceptance by contacting respective director through e-mail like you did? But they have written now in website. that please don't contact them personally.

3) I even got denial from northwestern. I applied to all the weird non competitive electives in that. Now what should I do?  Denials from everywhere. Does doing electives in Canada counts? I mean other univs except Toronto, (Toronto application closed for 2010)

Hi ravinder

I dont know the answer to questions regarding yale and johns hopkins but i encountered a similar prob on tufts. They said they only allow  students from affiliated list of colleges and my college was not on the list. However when a frnd of mine called she spoke to the registrar or someone and the registrar said there was no such thing and anyone could apply. So we applied and both of us got electives there. So just give it  one more shot.

Sincerely,

-Purav

Hi Ravinder

1. I applied in radiology and emergency medicine but was not accepted in radiology because that month all the yale students themselves opted for radiology and there was not even a spot even for any US med student, so that might be the reason. There must have been all the spots filled by Yale students and then US students... in your mentioned specialties. You can ask them for confirmation.

They must have their own accredited list.

2. I think it does help.... I did not contact many people... but all the people I met there was accepted only by sending emails personally to the docs from the alumni... if they have written that now... probably it is not a wise idea anymore...

3. Yes electives in Uni of Toronto do count as good electives...

Hi Naganath

Thanks for your kind words. Congratulations on your acceptance! I am very happy for you.

Please contact the JHUSOM admin for exact details but when I went there last year, it was about $300 tuition fees and about $325/ month health insurance and about $90-95 per week for the hostel (though I am not sure about the exact figures).

i wanted to ask how did you apply to henry ford since you had mentioned that you were accepted there.they donot have a link to the visitng students, even when you click at the link provided above the harvard medical school page opens up.thankyou.

Hi waqar

Thanks for pointing out the mistake... I modified the link... I sent an email to the elective co-ordinator and emailed few people to be my supervisor...  one or two professors accepted me and then I forwarded my application... I was accepted in neurosurgery... later I cancelled it...

Dear Umar Bhai,

thank you for answering my queries. THANKS A LOT.

Umar bhai, i wish to apply to Henrry Ford. I have downloaded the form from the their website. In the form, there were categories "to be filled by the student", electives dates , etc etc.. In your web site i had read regarding finding a sponsor for henry ford. As you had said that v need to first apply by mailing to few professors of henry ford. Instead of mailing , i called a doctor in the neurology research dept., Dr. Manoranjan Santra , & asked him if he would be my  supervisor, but to my sheer badluck , he told me that he was absolutely unaware of such things. can you please guide me as to how i proceed with the application & finding a supervisor for myself??? i wish to do an elective in neurosurgery??//

p.s. can you plz tel me the names of the faculty members along with their email id, whom you had mailed as i also wish to do elective in neurosurgery????PLEASE

and one more thing, should i first find a supervisor by emailing him & sending my CV or should i first send the application form???

Thank you so much.

 Hi Piyush

Most welcome anytime, the pleasure is all mine!

Please confirm the current application procedure from their elective co-ordinator, procedure changes every year. In case, the old procedure still holds, you should first find a sponsor and then mail your application.

Must commend for the grear effort you have been putting in maintaining this portal. Kudos to the Mods.
I have an enquiry as well as an update regarding the info indicated against the Name of the colleges above.
Yale School of Medicine requires a Toefl Record. It does not specify the minimum score required. But it does say, "A record of your TOEFL scores or University of Cambridge ESOL scores if you are a non-native English speaker." amongst 9 other documents reqd. to apply. (medicine.yale.edu/globalhealth/international/requirements.html)
Coming to the enquiry, I would like to know the methodology of the compilation of the above said 47 colleges. The reason i ask the methodology is, i want to shortlist atleast 10 colleges to apply to. The list above pretty much includes all the big names that there are. But I was wondering if there might be a college which might not be a big name but would be the best option for me in terms of the schedule and speciality of the electives offered. What I am asking is:
1. Does the list above covers all the colleges which offer electives for IMGs? (If yes, then the questions below need not be answered.) Or are there more?
2. If there are more, Where do i look for them? ( I know this is a very broad question. But if there's not as definitive and precise list as the one you have complied, could you suggest a method to make one? I have already tried the rankings from grad-schools.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-graduate-schools/top-medical-schools . Doesnt seem to be helping much.)
3. Ok here comes the cropper. What should really be my criteria of Short listing the list. Pls give this question the least weightage. As I am just double checking.

Thanks for your time and interest.

Ritin

Thanks a lot for your kind words and the update.

1. I think so...

2. try google search...

3. varies from person to person... some go for big name... some for less fees... some for specialty... some for a specific state.... its your own choice...

I had posted dis earlier 2... do i need to send my transcript, malprac insurance letter, health record etc. rite nw??? (i filled d online app few days back)... or r these required after acceptance from NIH??? plz help!

 hey andy!!

U dont need to submit those with the application!Vicki Malick, the Co-ordinator will ask you for them, after acceptance when required.

Even I need to send my Malpractise insurance copy...I dont know where to get it here.If u have an Idea...plz let me know.

I mailed Jefferson visiting student elective coordinator asking if i can get the malpractice insurance after i get an acceptance, or if i could get a malpractice insurance company to write for me that they'll provide me MPI once i am selected, if that'll be ok to send with the aplication. they denied, simply replying that i MUST have MPI proof with my application. so jefferson is almost out for me now. Is there any other way i can convince them?

Hi there, Why dont you buy from academicins. they state that they will refund the malpractice insurance fees, if you are not selected for any elective and show them the rejection letter. how to buy? goto www.academicins.com or http://www.academicins.com/ifmsa.html Best Wishes

Dear Umar Bhai, Thanks a lot for such an informative website.

Umar bhai, i got a TOEFL Score of 91 with 26 in speaking, 24 in writing, 22 in reading and 19 in listening.

Is this okay to apply for electives in USA. If not, should i give the TOEFL Again???

hi.

can i answer this on behalf of umar bhai?

not all universities in the US require TOEFL scores for applications for electives. some ones are specific about the TOEFL.

here are your options-

1. u can choose to apply to those universities which do not require TOEFL scores.

2. if u want to apply to universities requiring TOEFL scores you can ask them to give you a telephonic interview and waive off the TOEFL requirement. some prog. coordinators may actually agree and oblige.

3. u can take toefl again and improve your score.

4. u can get a supportive document from your college dean, and get mentioned that you have satisfactory communication skills in english, both written and spoken. this could be a separate document or part of cert. of good standing.

5. you can project your TOEFL score by saying that you have scored 26 in speaking and 24 in writing and not mention the other scores, if applying to universities where TOEFL is not a reuirement. (coz obviously TOEFL does help)

dont lose hope.. u can get into electives without a toefl score and also with low scores, just play it well..

goodluck

i wanted to know about scope of electives in north western university of chicago..

do u have any idea about it..

what are the fees

basically i am intern in india and wanted to know if it would make any difference if i did elective in IL state and not in NY

plz reply

Northwestern university is a very great university, charges 1000$ as pm fees. I did there and liked it.

Elective state has no difference, be it NY or IL as long as it is US.

first of all thank u for developing such a good site!

i have a query. i am going through the process of application for 'usce' these days. i want to ask 2 things:

1. it has been mentioned that its personal choice abt where to apply but still there must be certain adv of applying to a particular place over others?? i mean how do i prioritize abt where to apply n where not? factors other than fee or place. just purely which univ better than other or in other words experienc or lor of which univ will be better than others. it'll be great if u can give some list on this basis. plss. thank in anticipation.

2. it has also been mentioned that applying to teaching hospitals is better. d list that u provide for img's- does that include both teaching n non teaching hospitals? if yes pls tel which ol are teaching hospitals. i really wanna land up at d ryt place.. plss help

  thanks alot!!

univ of masachesuttes is saying that it will accept people from indian colleges which have tie up with it ... is it ..

and in ur list above , are there colleges like that included .... dont all these colleges in the  list accept all people from india

I m not sure abt it... the list above is of all the medical schools that accept medical students from all over the world... but policies change every year... so it might be a new rule in this university...

Dear Vijay

It depends upon what position he is working at? In any case, you have to apply via the same procedure... better confirm it from elective co-ordinator...
