Never Lose Hope!

by Umar Tariq

' Hope is a good thing, probably the best of all the things one could ever come across.'

Keeping a clear vision and heart is important. There are moments when we are disappointed and dejected, when we totally loose hope but there is so much sadness in the world; for a moment consider those people who are less fortunate and less blessed than us, those poor  helpless people who cannot afford two times meals, who could not even dream of the basic necessities of life; those unfortunate people  who have lost their limbs/ their senses; even then, they all try to live life happily with a hope of better tomorrow; if they can... why can't  we?

We are very lucky to be born with much blessed minds, bodies and souls than many other people of the world but that puts lots of extra  responsibilities on us for the ones less fortunate and we cannot fulfil those responsibilities if we lose hope in life.

The greatest barrier to success is the fear of failure. Grief, sorrow, fear and apprehensions...all are integral part of life; they make us realize the 'true' reality of happiness and success, thus adding to the beauty of life. Life without fears and apprehensions would have been dull. They are like horror movies, breath-taking rides that many of us enjoy. Infact, we enjoy the feeling of fear. If we never fail, we never live...

Falling down at the first, second or even the third step does not make you unable to climb the remaining steps! Losing a few times in life, does not make you a loser; in fact losing, teaches us 'how not to be a loser in life' by rising again and not losing next time. Many of the great achievements of the world were accomplished by tired and discouraged men who kept on working. Growth occurs when one goes beyond one's limits; realizing this is an integral part of growth itself.

Being a pessimist, can do no good except discouraging you but being an optimist, always pays you; a pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity and an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty. So always think positively and never lose hope! Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts! Success is the ability to go from one failure to another with no loss of enthusiasm.

Just imagine, after few years, when you would have achieved in life, all that, you want to achieve today, with this hope of better tomorrow, a person comes to you with the same fears and apprehensions of life as you hold today and asks you how to deal with them... you would smile away... you smile away all your apprehensions and fears regarding today... everything passes on with time; time does not wait for anything and life does not stop anywhere.

The most precious thing of life is not life itself; our existence is like leaves of a tree, once old leaves fall down, there are always new young green ones to bud; the newer generation always surpasses the previous ones, that's why next generation is dear to the previous generation as the newer generation carries all their hopes; somethings never die even if we die, even if our life ends and hope is one of them; hope is one of those precious things of life that never fades off; hope of a better tomorrow because after all there is a better tomorrow.

If something is precious to you, protect it with both arms, that is when you become strong, really strong! Whatever is precious to you; your loved ones, your dreams, your ambitions should never become your weaknesses; they should be your strength in order to help you overcome your weakness and make you strong, really strong. The most precious thing of our life is the purpose of our life for what you have lived for your whole life and we should never give up our purpose; our aims in life. The biggest strength in life is the strength of hope; the power of never giving up. Believing in yourself can provide you with power to change your destiny.

All is well that ends well and in life, with passing time, actually everything does end well ultimately!

If we are hopeful in life, we are happy; so never lose hope my dear friend!

Q) JHSOM require US based hospital's insurance...can i use IMG global for this purpose, is it US based? If not any other option available other than getting their own insurance ..which is very costly 2 as website states"Foreign insurance is not acceptable. Application for coverage in the School of Medicine insurance program can be made at the time of registration. The cost is $251 per month"

Q) Are all the research electives international student friendly? If not, which one are?

hi ishan...

1.I have been to Hopkins...so I would very strongly recommend you not to buy any other health insurance, American or Non-American for Hopkins...when you go there...they offer their own insurance for $221 per month and I believe it is very good!

2. I am sorry I do not know the answer to this question...tc and best of luck!

umar bhai m goin crazy wid d document stuff!... c every univ requires malprac n health insu n deans approval letter...in original... how can v get more than 1 original letter if v wanna apply for 4-5 schools for electives?????

well if u ask the insurance companies to give 5-7 extra copies for some money, I dont think they hesitate.. as far as dean's letter is concerned...ask ur college's authorities for it.... I requested some of the clerks and then they gave me extra copies... u can pay them extra money for it...I dont think they would argue over it... otherwise ask the colleges if u can submit...good quality...coloured photocopies... I hope it helps...tc and best of luck!

hi Umar, hw did u manage 2 do 6months of electives? dint d dates clash? im hvin probs wit dates. there could be 1 wk of overlapping if i get in CASE western n SUNY

Hi Varun, I did not have really a big clash of dates but at one place, I requested them to reschedule my four weeks elective into three weeks elective which they did so you can request one of them to reduce the duration of electives from four weeks to three weeks . Generally most of the elective programs are very friendly and try to help and accommodate in whatever ways possible....  I hope it helps ... Take care and best of luck !

Considering that i come from a simple middle class family,.... umar bhai how many univs (approx.) do u think 1 shud apply wid a decent CV and all documents ready??

well I dont think there is a real answer to this question...it all varies with luck...sometimes u can apply at only 3 places and can be accepted in all of them. Sometimes you can apply in 6 places and cannot be accepted. So it all varies with luck! But as I see it....if you prepare well and apply smartly...u can be accepted in one of every two or three places you apply....tc and best of luck!

sameer, there is not a list of universites for research like electives... because most of the universities have a well-developed electives programs for international students but not for research... mostly research is arranged on individual basis or by applying for a research program... in short almost every US university and its every department has some sort of research going on...always!!! hope that helps...tc and best of luck!

hello umer bhai.....I am currently a 2nd year student in Pakistan...and i plan to enter the US in the next year i.e in the summers.......because of the medical college proceedings here i would be able to go for a periodof 1 month only.......I plan to target  a radiology spot later.....considering this I have 2 questions:

Q1: for a period of 1 month would an observership be better or a research elective?

Q2: If i go for an observership is it better to go to a physician I know ie a contact not necessarily in a top notch university or go to some top university hospital instead if i can?

sir hav u completed  months of electives????? wow sir thats awesme.. is tht authentic news?

vaibhav... can u plz mention how many months you meant??? well I completed 7 months of electives... but is this a news or a rumour....lol... it amuses me... tc

i heard 6 months... but u completed 7 months of electives????????? wow gr8... seriously... how come ur college allows it... very appretiable... wht field are u aiming for? and can u study during ur electies?

well my college does not allow it... actually no college allows it... but I went for electives after my final exams and fortunately my University is tooooo lazy to announce the result in a few months and I made use of that....as I am still a student as long as my result is not declared... there is still a chance that I can fail and have to reappear... anyhow I am glad I passed now! I plan to go for radiology! You can definitely study for 2-4 hours during electives... but I dont think... more than that!

gr8 use of time bhai.... thats really an example to others... i repent wasting so much time now..but its gone now hav to think positive.. :)

bhai i hav a small problem..yest nit i spoke to one of my frnds who has finished step 1.

i hav as such not finished step 1. he suggested me that i finish my step 1 before going for electives.so i hav 2 options-

1.study now for 3 months go for electives from feb toapril come back and giv step 1 in 2 months n then step 2 after  to  months.or

2.if i plan to giv step 1 now i should postpone my electives. that is i should giv my step one by feb and go for electies from april till june...

im in dilemma.. i know i myself ha to tak a decision but can u advice something? plz

there is a very famous saying haste makes waste... so keep one thing dont rush yourself into anything... relax and take your time to do whatever you want to do... that' the only advice I can give you! Keeping a gap of few months in your prep is not a very smart thing to do but at the same time, applying for electives with prep is also a difficult job, anyhow if I have to choose the lesser of the evils... I would go with the latter! tc and best of luck!

so bhai u think i should give my step 1 and then go for electives in april.. thanks a lot.. i will surely think oer it with a calm mind.. wont rush for anything... thank u very much.. but again i ha to show wht i hav done in this time ..i mean the gap that will b created in my c.v.. :( anyway will think at peace and decide.. if any other advice plz tell me.. thank u.. god bless u...

well let me put it this way... what do you think what sounds more fascinating... 90s with 3 months gap or (God forbid) 70s/ 80s with no gap... keep one thing in mind the score is most important... again I would say dont rush... obviously cv gaps are important but after your score... tc and best of luck!

i got confused again bhai... :( do u suggest i should do step 1 now and postpone my electives or i shd do electives as planned and then come back and giv steps?and anyway i will b applyin for match 2012 because i will b finishin my internship next year in april mostly so in our university we get diploma 1 year after out internship.. so i need graduation certificate to apply which i wil b gettin on april 2012.. so plz suggest

hello umerbhai,,,,u hv bn doin a fabulous kinda work by guidin us.m 3rd 1st yr medical student in india.(2 year before internship).i wanna persuade core clerkship abt 4 wks in 2010 during my summer vac.i would like to knw d list of collages dat offer me core clerkship in IM.i would also like to let u knw dat i hv B1/B2 visa.is it feasible to do core clerkship or research elective?

hi dhruvan... usually most of the US med schools dont offer core clerkships... not to the best of my knowledge... if you come to know of any...plz lemme know...a research elective might be a much better option in your case... B1/ B2 is good for most of the electives... keep one thing in mind the type of required visa depends upon the university you are going and not on the type of electives you are doing... tc and best of luck!

hi everyone...due to bad luck i lost step 1 by 5 marks...im lost now..can anyone tell me what are my chances of getting a residency?only keen on psychiatry...is it tough?will they reject my application?

how should i study this time?how many months should i take...need urgent guidance please...

well I believe... if you score really well... it wont hurt much... keep one thing in mind that you have to match at only one place for residency... try to score well next time...

honestly speaking, I believe a 95-99 on a second attempt is better than 75-79 on 1st attempt! Moreover Psychiatry is not a highly competitive specialty.

well study and no. of months always varies person to person....anything from 2 to 12 months! tc and best of luck!

thanks for the advice.i will try my best..

can you tell me wher ill find nbme and uworld self assessments..as i.cant take all of them...or if i have to buy which ones should i do?should i study or do more questions this time.. did u world last time, should i repeat again.. and what about anat i felt kaplan books dint cover much..what else should i refer...please guide me..

I am sorry... I have not given my step 1 yet... so I cant really guide u... wud advise u to ask someone experienced... anyways in general, I wud recommend doing more MCQs and study more material.... tc and best of luck!

hi umar bhai

INSTRUCTIONS:
COMPLETE & SUBMIT THE VISITING STUDENTS – NON LCME ELECIVE REQUEST FORM DURING THE FOLLOWING
PERIOD: APRIL 13, 2009 – May 11, 2009. DO NOT SUBMIT ANY ADDITIONAL DOCUMENTS.

this was instructions at d NYU website.... does it mean we have to apply 1 year prior to this college? now hav we lost te chance of applying?

well seems like they have a system like Baylor.... i.e you can apply for whole year's session during a specific time... if it is like this....then you missed the chance.... tc n best of luck!

bhai one more doubt... my internship was expected to end on 01/09/09 ..... but as i hav not given joinin for last 15 days so its postponed.. but bhai in every college application they ask expected date of completion of internship... what date should b entered over ther....?

most welcome anytime... keep one thing in mind that there is not much difference in acceptance rates of different months... usually only in summers U S students do electives... but even then I dont think it matters much becz u need to be accepted at few, not all the places... so dont think about acceptance rates of different months... tc and best of luck!

thanks a lot bhai..... god bless u bless u bless u bless u a lot.... without ur website i dont think i can even think of doing an elective...n i think whoeer is doin electies will atleast visit ur site once... coz ur site for electives is what google is to search engines.. :) tak cre all d best

salam umar bhai,

im a 3rd yr med student .ure forum is amazing, got loads of info. Im in such a fix, i applied to for research electives to the US, Canada and singapore, i did get acceptance from Mcgill but they wanted malprac insurance and i had no idea how to get that. I have some questions if u can answer, im really desperate coz the rejections for these electives has left me miserable. i want to do my residency from the US:

1. is it safe applying for the US just for visit when u actual intend to use it for electives for a later year, for eg ppl get a 5 yr visa, but im afraid abt rejection and whether applying now would be safer coz of the long security clearance thing. My passport is empty too so im really confused coz some ppl say if u ure first visa on the passport is a US visa and if its rejected thats a bad thing.

2. Is doing an elective in singapore NUS in the 4th yr any advantage when applying to the US for residency or (visa for electives in 5th yr)?

3.Im in Dow, and they have introduced the semester system in which we have to 2 profs a yr, with half the course in each and they have also added ENT and Ophtal now in our 4th yr instead of the final. With profs in June and Dec, would it be advisable to sit for USMLE step 1 in 4th or would u recommend I give it after graduation

Plz help,

Regards

ZIA

 salam zia...

congrats on ur acceptance in mcgill... its a great place... I work for the editorial board of their journal of medicine...

1. No its not a wise idea... you can get malpractice insurance from uni of toronto if you are looking something for canada... also visit malpractice coverage page of this website...

2. somewhat.... it helps somewhat....

3. varies from person to person... some people can do... but some people are too involved in medical curriculum studies... or extra-curricular activities... that they don't have enough time to study for steps during MBBS but... some of my friends did that and got high 90s, even 99s!!!

take care and best of luck!

Dear Umar;

I came across your name on the KEMCAANA message boards on Yahoo. I had seen it before but never got around to writing. I must say I am amazed at how focussed and energetic you are at such a young age. I was nowhere near as enterprising when I was at KEMC (graduated in '91). It is great to see how you are helping others at achieving their goals. I work in a small town in Arkansas as a Psychiatrist. If there is any way I can help, let me know. Keep up the good work.

Regards,

Ali

Dear Ali bhai,

Thanks a lot for your kind words. It has been because of help, guidance and support from many of the seniors like you that we were able to develop this website otherwise as a student at KE, we have absolutely no know-how of anything... and now as you can see, people not only from KE are helped but all over the world... thanks a lot for your kind words...... Hi umar Bhai

I have sent the request form to NYU .I wanted to know what is their acceptance rate and after how much time they reply??.

Also i am planning to apply at NIH next year in January and june(2011) .Is it such that Cardiology and Endocrinolgy electives at NIH rarely select foreign medical students ???

Nobody knows about acceptance rate of any university... this is something that varies every month... usually most universities reply in 2-4 months...

Many students get endocrinology electives in NIH every year... I dont know about cardio....

Hi Umar,
My final year is from july 2010 to july 2011,
so if i apply for the elective and get accepted for a program in september, can i finish my graduation in july and still go for my elective in september or do i need to postpond my graduation till the completion of my elective??

In short is it necessary that we remain in our final year till the completion of our elective?

hi. visit the section on this site..the requirement of toefel for universities changes from session to session. i think weil cornell and ayle dont recquire it to get you started. but my advice would be the ones that recquire toefel demand less money . and toefel is not too big a deal. i gave it recently with 2 days of preperation and got 106. gave the exam 2 days before the final mbbs final  exam. so in short toefel is better !! n Usmle scores r the best to get u in

I m dr.quratulain, a pakistani citizen, graduated this year (2010). i m currently preparing 4 step 1. and will be appearing for it in feb 2011 inshAllah.im thinking to go 4 clinical observership after attempting my step1.

i need to ask u that  as a graduate can i apply for observership at any medical school in usa and what r my chances of getting visa?

and i also need to know that what medical schools offer observership program to foreign graduates?

kindly help me with my queiries

Thanks.

You can apply to all those places that offer observerships to graduates! If you get acceptance from a good place, you have good chances of getting visa. I am not aware of medical schools offering observerships to FMGs... I think Harvard does!

i am an intern from mamc.i am willing to do electives.but i am not getting permission from college.but i am going to do my observership next year.does it affect my cv so significantly that i don get a residensy in usa in int medicine.?......and are sites like fmg portal really helpful?

Hello Rohan

There must be a number of your seniors from MAMC who went to the US for electives. Contact them to know how they managed to get permission. I think many a times some students of some colleges do not take permission for leaving the college and just vanish one fine day and return when the electives are over. But I will suggest you to take formal permission and then go for electives. Now when students do not take permission to go for electives I am not sure what means they use to get their elective application form signed by their Dean. Its possible that your Dean signed your elective application but your hospital superintendent is not allowing you to take a break in internship to go for electives. In that case you can talk to him genuinely and emphasize the importance of electives in your CV for application for residency. Electives are very important to get residency posts. In fact various universities also have different rules that for applying in XYZ dept for residency you should have N number of months of elective rotations done in the US. So then you might be stuck later on while applying to certain universities. Try and manage something.

Can any one give an idea about what kind of housing is provided in Mount Sinai for the Foreign visiting students for Electives. What all will be there in the furnished room.  What will be the arrangement for food? They are charging $900 per month. Will it be a single room or sharing one ?

Your thoughts are a great sense of inspiration but at some points really lingering when your make afraid of Pakistani students that never think of starting a research group in your country .Its sad cz like your webpage and other welfare jobs, someone has to start at some point. You also mentioned that most tired and apparently unsuccessful people were behind the astontishing and hear-touching discoveries of nature.Really the apprehensions and fear would never let you proud of being a Pakistani. At least learn from some recent accomplishments of handicapped people in Pakistan.they are not more blessed than you people.I highly suggest  Pakistani students, now the competition of getting into competitive field anywhere in the world is not so easy.SO,start the research societies and groups according to your goals and start working. This is also necessary for the very existence of Pakistani society in this flourishing scientific world as a Global Village.SO by the name of God .........start....................

I am an intern and have 2 months left for my graduation. I got an approval from JHU immunology department for research elective. Its a lab research for 8-9 weeks. I am confused whether to go ahead or not, as far as I understand he is PhD and it must be a lab research, not clinical. Is it worth to go for it? I have both time and money constraints. Please suggest.

aoa and thank u Umar bhai for all the guidance! I am a 3RD YEAR STUDENT at KEMU and I intend to take my step 1 exam at THE END OF MY 4TH YEAR and for that I've already started my preparation. I want to get into a SURGERY RESIDENCY which is a bit difficult to get ( a few might say 'A LOT' difficult but I don't believe in impossibilities ). for that matter I need your guidance regarding how to manage my studies along with my preparation. I also intend to do research work to help boost up my CV along with the electives. now I need to know 1. where to go and who to ask for the research? ( in Pakistan) 2. how to get it published? 3. which thing first? (electives or step 1)? 4. can I go for electives during my 4th year?(research electives)
