Electives-FAQs

  • Which Documents we get after electives?
  • You should try to get a proof of your elective from the university. Some do give LORs and some dont... if you dont impress them. Its always better to get a LOR alongwith an Evaluation form signed....for your college...even if your college does not require it. For further details on it and regarding its sample, please visit the Electives section. back to top
    • When to apply for electives?
    • As soon as you can....although many good universities do not fill spots on "first come first serve basis" but even then I dont think there is any point of waiting and delaying your application when all the documents are ready. First complete your application and documents, double check them and send them.
    • It is advisable to apply 8-10 months in advance but you can also be accepted by applying even 4-6 months before the starting date of electives. back to top
  • Where to go for electives?
  • First of all get electives wherever you find them and if you are lucky enough to have multiple acceptances.... it depends upon what are your priorities...
    • which specialty you have your electives in? is it in your specialty of choice? the first thing....
    • is it in a top university program? the second factor...
    • is it in a state where you want to live in with some relatives/friends? This can be the first factor for many of you....

best of luck! back to top

    • Is there any use of electives in fields other than field/specialty of interest?
    • Yes it is always better to have SOMEthing than NOthing but its always better to secure a elective in the specialty of your choice. A Medicine/ Medicine sub-specialty LOR would be better than an Opthalmology LOR for applying into a IM program but again Opthalmology LOR is better than no LOR for IM residency... back to top
    • How many weeks of electives/ number of electives are enough/sufficient?
    • 1 month- something is better than nothing
      3 months- good
      6 months- very very good
      1 year- ideal

These hold true for clinical fields like IM/FP/Surgery etc

Any question you ask regarding steps, electives, research etc.......its answer would depend on one simple fact.... which specialty you want to pursue your medical career....e.g clinical electives are always considered superior to research electives for surgery/medicine fields but research electives/ research carry far more weightage than clinical electives in feilds like Pathology, Radiology etc. first finalise your specialty and then go through the residency programs of that field to see their eligibility requirements....best of luck! back to top

  • How to get a sponsor for electives
  • For Henry Ford:
You  can   contact  the  faculty  members  by  the  emails. You  cant  find  the  email   addresses  of  the faculty on  the  website, but you can  find  the  names of  faculty members on  it.
Go to www.henryford.com  and then go to 'Find Doctors'.
There  is  a  formula  for  determining  the email  addresses  from  their  first  and  second  names.
So, what  you  need  to do to  get  the  email  ID  of  a  faculty  is  using the   FIRST LETTER  OF  THE  FIRST  NAME  and  FIRST SIX  LETTERS  OF  THE  2ND  NAME  and  THEN ADDING  1  before  @hfhs.org
For  example,  If  the  name  of  Faculty  is  Steven Harrison,  then the  email  ID    will  be     sharris1@hfhs.org  (same  thing: FIRST LETTER  OF  THE  FIRST  NAME  and  FIRST SIX  LETTERS  OF  THE  2ND  NAME  and  THEN ADDING  1  before  @hfhs.org)
You must always  send  your  CV  in the email  for request of sponsor, stating your  purpose  and desire to do electives  in  Henry Ford.
You  should  send  emails to  a  number  of  faculty  members,  because  only  a  few  one  are  going  to  reply  you  back.
While  emailing  anyone, whether  its  elective  coordinator  or  faculty  member, dont  start  with  words  like  madam/sir. You  can  always  start  with  words  like  Dear Dr. Harrison.
    For Emory:
The  email IDs  are  available  on  their  website,  in  the  faculty  corner of  each  department.
Again, you  should  email  as  many faculty  members as  you  can  with  your  CV, because  only  a  few  one  are  going to answer  you. You should not email without attaching your CV. back to top
    • How can I improve my chances for acceptance for electives in any medical school?
    • I believe TOEFL/ USMLE step 1 are big plus points but a good CV and good personal statement alongwith good documentation and proper filling of application forms are far more important. Its the combination of all these which counts.
    • TOEFL is not a bad deal for 165 $. Hundreds of dollars are spent in application fees and thousands of dollars in tuition fees and if you spend mere 165 $ for TOEFL it increases your chances tremendously. Moreover it opens many new good new places for you that have no fees e.g NIH. back to top
    • What is the cost of malpractice coverage
    • As far as malpractice is concerned... it depends upon the insurance company you are using...e.g some local companies offer insurance only for their local universities... so obviously you need to buy separate insurance if you are applying to multiple universities...but some do offer a combined package but they charge extra depending upon the no of universities and the duration of coverage....as far as I know academic insurance is the most cheap and suitable one and they offered insurance for one uni for around 200 $ for 8 weeks I guess but if you give them a list of about 10 uni... it is about 400 $ for 8 weeks... I might be wrong in figures...anyways there are some insurance companies who offer you insurance that holds true for all the US med schools... if you get one of this type, you dont mention the name of school while you are filling out their forms... it holds good for every university...and you just need to send a photocopy or simply a print out of the soft copy to the elective co-ordinators. back to top
      • Which malpractice coverage I should go for?
      • Depends upon u...If you are interested in medical assistant student insurance (which is not a 'true' medical student insurance but even then recommended by all the seniors) then go for hpso.com or proliability.com. If you are interested in genuine medical student insurance then undoubtedly www.academicins.com is the best, I like both their professionalism as well as their comparatively affordable quotes i.e about 250- 350 $ as compared to others 1050-1250 $. back to top
  • How much TOEFL helps for electives?
  • TOEFL is not a bad deal for 150 $. Hundreds of dollars are spent in application fees and thousands of dollars in tuition fees and if you spend mere 150 $ for TOEFL it increases your chances tremendously. Moreover it opens many new good new places for you that have no fees(see below).
Following universities require or prefer toefl
  • NIH(requires TOEFL)
    Wisconsin(requires TOEFL)
    Northwestern(requires TOEFL)
    Uni of Massachusettes(requires TOEFL)
    Uni of Cincinnati(requires TOEFL)
    Vermont(requires TOEFL)
    TUFTS(requires TOEFL)
  • Yales(prefers TOEFL)
    Harvard(prefers TOEFL)

Moreover there are many more universities that prefers TOEFL. I strongly recommend giving TOEFL as soon as possible for everyone going for electives. back to top

  • How much score do I need to get in TOEFL?
  • The more score you get in TOEFL, the better it is....they have no cut off value, usually anything above 90 is very good and above 100 is considered exceptional....but make sure you score evenly good in all 4 aspects...rather than being at the top in 3 and at the bottom in any 1....that is try to score in late 20s out of 30 in all the 4 sections of reading, writing, speaking and listening. Best of luck! back to top
  • How much USMLE Step 1 help for electives?
  • USMLE Step 1 increases your chances tremendously for electives. Its always good if you have given USMLE step 1 but I wont recommend giving step 1 for electives as steps score is the primary thing and electives are the secondary factor for residency...u cant risk the primary factor for the secondary factor.... back to top
  • Can I get a acceptance after rejection?
  • Yes you can. Try requesting change in dates or change in specialty/field of elective to the elective co-ordinator after rejection. Usually they are quite helpful 'esp after rejection'...they try to accommodate you. Just play your cards well!
  • How can I improve my CV?
    • What u can do to improve ur CV depends upon your specialty of choice. Following is the priority list for Internal Medicine:

      1. Clinical Electives(or any other USCE) in IM or any subspecialty
      2. Longtime Research+ Publications in IM or any subspecialty
      3. Short-term Research+ Publications in IM or any subspecialty
      4. Longtime Research without publication in IM or any subspecialty.
      5. Short-term Research without publication in IM or any subspecialty
      6. Research Elective without publication in IM or any subspecialty.
      7. Clinical Electives in any other field.
      8. Longtime Research+ Publications in any specialty
      9. Short-term Research+ Publications in any specialty
      10. Longtime Research without publication in any specialty.
      11. Short-term Research without publication in any specialty
      12. Research Elective without publication in any specialty.

If you fulfil any of the first 3 in some good program... you have a strong chance of getting an interview call from there and then its upto you to impress them during interview and before it now.......

I have set the priority list especially for IM according to the best of my knowledge.

  • Is there any use of doing short-term research/observership/electives?
  • Always remember if there is not a disadvantage of something....there is always some advantage... SOMEthing is always better than NOthing....every achievement/ hard work does pay back sooner or later....

So whatever you can get...grab that opportunity and learn to convert half chances to complete ones....always remember....every experience in life teaches you a useful lesson for the future experiences of life....so they are not wasted...they carry the same importance as your school carried for your college and ur college carried for ur medical college... nothing is useless....never run away from any experience....grab whatever you can get and then have faith in yourself and your hard work.... always remember.....chances are not available....they are always created my dear....and if you find one...dont miss it....and if you made use of one....never regret it... it can never be 'useless'! You would realize this later my dear friend....go for everything u can get....best of luck!

    • On which visa to go for electives/ which visa we need for electives?
    • Depends upon the University you are applying to.......most of the Universities sponsor B1/ B2 visa but now due to some of the recent changes in the Visas many universities require you to come on J visa even for electives. You can apply for visa once you have received the acceptance letter. If you have received the acceptance letter, then you should contact the electives co-ordinator of the respective university and confirm their visa requirements and then apply for that category of visa! If you wish to come to USA for any of the following reasons, you can apply for B1 or B2 Visitor VISA. (Visiting your relatives/friends, medical treatment, Attending meeting, company sponsored training).
Business related visitors can only apply for B1. Others can apply for B2.
The purpose of your VISIT should be short term and you should have permanent residence in the home country (in your case Pakistan).
To obtain B1/B2 VISA, the visitor should show strong evidence to prove that their intention is just to visit USA and their stay in US will only be temporary. Also, they should submit the documents to prove that they have strong base in their home country and will return from US within the permitted time.
      Documents for B1 Visitor Visa
      • Letter from your sponsor. US company or organization explaining the purpose of your visit, duration etc.
      • Supporting documents from you to explain the purpose of the visit. If your visit is for the company purpose, you need the letter from your company.
      • Supporting documents from you. To prove that you have strong tip up with your home country (Bank statements, Family details, employment details)
      • VISA application form. - (Form DS-156)
      • Valid Passport
      • 2 Photographs
      • Visa fee
I hope this will help you.
    • Should I go for electives on a J1 visa?
    • If u dont find elective anywhere there is no harm in doing one at J1... Some places like Mount Sinai require it for electives...
I would prefer a elective in mount sinai than no elective at all but keep in mind J1 is also a very big hurdle.
    • Is step 1 necessary for observership/electives?
    • No its not at all necessary to give step 1 before observerships/electives, I myself did an observership in internal medicine in 2007 and I had not given USMLE step 1 then.
Although step 1 increases chances tremendously for electives/observership but it is not compulsory in many universities. Observership/Electives may or may not require your USMLE steps.
  • Am I late for electives?
  • You are late only if you have graduated because once you have graduated you cant do any more electives otherwise you can never be late...I would say even if there is 0.0000001% chance, dont miss it becz if you miss it....there would be no chance not even this 0.000001%, SOMEthing is better than NOthing my dear!!!
Its never late. Although its better to be pro-active but dont consider yourself to be late if you had been not. Although it is recommended to start applying 8-10 months in advance but I have seen people being accepted while applying just 2-3 months in advance whereas many people are rejected applying 10 months in advance. So the thing that counts the most is your luck, so always keep praying for yourself and others.
  • Plz go ahead! never waste time in thinking... you always have a chance... there is nothing like impossible or 0 % chance... as I mentioned I know people who even got accepted by sending applications just 2-3 months before...so never miss a chance... whenever you find one grab it.... and whenever there is a half-chance... convert it into a complete one...best of luck!!!

This is my first time on this website and it seems to offer alot of answers to the many queries I had in mind. The whole process of applying for a residency in the US is so daunting that it took me several attempts to finally start trying...atleast.

@ Andy : I don't know which country you're from but here in INDIA(Delhi) AHA certified Basic Life Support and Advanced Cardiac Life Support workshops are conducted in some of the reputed hospitals( like Apollo, Ganga Ram) from time to time (every 3-4 months). The workshop is held over 3 days and requires the participant to clear a test at the end of BLS to proceed to ACLS. Similarly, one has to clear the test at the end of ACLS to become certified. This certificate remains valid for a period of 2 years.

 Hello Umar,

I am confused about purchasing malpractice insurance, Is proliability ok? Other companies need lotta formalities. Do they  accept proliability?  I am afraid if they cross check they may cancel my elective or reject my application

Ravinder

well ravinder, proliability is a fake insurance for visiting medical students... it is for medical assistants... and if u use it, it is illegal but still many people use it, though I don't recommend it...tc and best of luck!

guys, pls answer dis honestly

m a 3rd yr- part2 medical student (d year b4 internship) frm india (mumbai). wish to study in us, n wanna do an elective in int med. in US for 4-8 wks. i come frm a simple middl class family.. stretchin my finances 2 pursue my dream. wish 2 do an elective sumwher between sept 2010 to feb 2011.

giving evry1 out here my profile in brief:-

research bckgrnd:-

hav conducted 2 studies in dermat dis year.. will shortly giv it in sum indexed journal for publication (pardon me for bein 2 optimistic, but jus imagine both of them get published!)

hav conducted a study in community med 2yrs back(not published.)

presented a paper on osteoarthritis in a renownd symposium in mumbai

xtracurricular :-

volunteered (not as a participant) for the national conference on Indian Associatn of Dermats, Venereologs, leprologs dis yr.

member of inter-coll dance grp for past 4yrs.

rest of the profile is more or less similar to all u guys out der.

HOW MUCH DO I STAND A CHANCE DO MAKE IT IN SUM DECENT UNIV??

pls give a definite answer if possibl....

i m thinking of applying to 5 univs - most probably - rochestr, cincinnati, massachusetts, louiseville, U of chicago (pritzker).

in addition to that stated previously, i wud like 2 add dat i'm planning to giv TOEFL in jan 2010 to boost my chances.

also i dun wanna take a risk of applyin to top-ranked univ if dey aint goin 2 entertain ppl with my kinda profile.. i wud rathr apply to decently rankd one and get an acceptance.. d ones i decided n mentioned above dont hav tuition fees, r ranked in 30-60s (on the link provided by umar sir) nd dun require USMLE step1 (as of now).. so i hav decided it on my own w/o any guidance... dats d precise reason y m seeking ur help guys!...

keep one thing that most of the times it is not your CV or something extra that helps you get electives... I believe that 90% of the time it is your good documentation and plain luck... otherwise a person like me (with an average or below average med school records...lol) would have never got so many acceptances....lol...tc and best of luck!

transcript is a document proof from your college stating your scores, medical school performance and most importantly, the number of weeks you have worked in various departments... I would try to find  a sample for  you!

Letter of good standing simply states that Mr./ Ms.__________ is a student of ______ from______till _____ and is under good standing. That's it! Would upload its sample in few weeks!

tc n best of luck!

no harm in going on F1..but if u apply for B1/B2 category its better...as will help later for residency interviews...and step3..u can get 10yrs" iwth multiple entries if u r lucky...

but if u go on f1,then AGAIN u will have to apply for B visa during interviews &unnecessarily spend another 8k on  visa application fee..

but if u r  nt gtng into unis with B visa reqmt...go for F1...

hmm... that's an interesting aspect of the issue that I never thought of! Well... ya I agree that it is much more money savy and time savy... if you apply for B visa... thanks a lot for your smart point of view! tc and best of luck!

hi andy... I m sorry... actually I was using a spam filter to avoid unnecessary comments but all of a sudden it filtered all the comments as spam... now I made it inactive but now there are so many spam comments everyday...

some of my friends went to ucsf n rochester and I know someone who went to connecticut... IMGs do have a chance but ironically I think desi ppl dont as most of the IMGs I know who went there were from europe...

I wud ask my friend who went there... to email me the link and name of university... would keep you updated... tc n best of luck!

thnx soooo much for ur reply bhai!

bhai most of these sites (like rochestr, connecticut, ucsd) mention the earliest date of application being accepted as 1-n-half to 4 months earlier... while acc 2 wat u recommend, we must send it at least 6-7 months in advance (which i  absolutely agree considering the fact that seats r given on first-come-first-serve basis)..

Shud i follow ther date schedule n send only when they start? or is it better to post the documents whenever i hav dem ready?? so dat i minimize my chances of missing out?

PLZ HELP!

the online applicatn process at nih asks for our 'Current Cumulative GPA' and 'School Grading Scale' ... My medical college has no such system where v r 'graded'.. all v receive is an award for d 1st 3 positions at the end of the year on the basis of our University xam marks...NIH rule states d followin - 'Note: If you select 'Other', please explain in Section 3, Coursework and Grades. Be sure to describe your school's grading scale and your current cumulative average relative to that scale.' So what am i supposed to enter in this place???? wahat did u do umarbhai and medisid??

wil b grateful if u guys enlighten on this aspect!!

umarbhai zindabad! cheers..

Thanks for your kind words... but I am sorry... I am not sure.... as far as I remember I wrote my detailed marks e.g 550/650 etc.... with roughly estimated class position.... like 25th out of 250... etc.... hope it helps.... tc and best of luck!

for CGPA and grading scale write none/other...............

what i did in section coursework and grades was, rewrite what i had asked my college to give me in transcript.

1) total duration of lecture hours, 2) total weeks of core clerkships/ward duty 3) subject wise marks obtained in all the subjects, anat to surgery with total marks, pass marks and marks obtained columns. also each year exam taken and attempt taken to pass that exam. at the end i added a footnote stating that 50% is pass marks and 75 % is honors/disntinction marks; which very rarely 1 or 2 students get in each subject. (by this i indirectly emphasised that even 60% is gr8 marks as compared to class highest of rarer 75%).

best wishes!

thnx soooo much for the detaild reply medisid!!! was really kind of u...

btw, ur profile kinda looks similar to mine...!! a guy wid 60-70% marks in his MBBS days.. dunno wats d system in pakistan, but here in mumbai v r dam happy if v score anywher between 65-70% aggregate!!....

neways thnx 1ce again... n lookin forwrd to ur continued guidance in the future....

Hi Umar bhai,
                 how r u i hope fine. i need some immediate help as i am currently 4th year student at QAMC, BAHAWALPUR, i am planning to send online application to MAIMONIDES MEDICAL CENTRE, NY for electives but there is some problem with application form as it does not specifically speaks about requirements.;

1-Below medical college name , there is emergency contact,city/state & telephone. Are they asking mine or medical college;s.
2-States are only american states ,what do i do and should i write my own zip code in zip code section.
3-Can i give two electives with same start dates and one with different in order to obtain two electives of my preference.
4-Do u know the visa they offer . If they offer b1/b2 or f-1 which should i take.

i also want to inquire about NORTH SHORE LIJ MEDICAL CENTRE .I am unable to open its online application for quite long now ,actually i am really trying for reasonable electives in new york city as lot of my family members live there and it would save me some money.I am also trying to take my TOEFL as soon as possible after my sendups next month for MOUNT SINAI MEDICAL CENTRE as it offers f-1 visa.

please Umar bhai reply me as soon as u get this. And I must say u r doing commendable job.

 Hi Usman....

Lemme tell you... you dont have to register anywhere on this to comment.... just scroll down to the bottom of the page... write ur name... mention ur email id... and write ur comment...

1. Emergency Contact is used when God forbid.... something happens to you in US... who is the person to contact and report about your illness/ injury etc...... it can be some friend or relative, preferably in US....

2. Yup... I think leave it either unfilled or u can put any state u want... I think this is what I remember... plz browse previous comments for it...

3. Yup......

4. I think it is B1/B2...

There has been some problem with North Shore online application system for the past few days... for NY... I recommend Weil Cornell, NYU, SUNY Downstate.....

tc n best of luck!

thanx Umar bhai for ur timely help , regarding error in application system at NSLIJ medical centre, i think it has been corrected as i have been able to open and copy the application form that was impossible to even open a few weeks back. I think NYU is not accepting elective applications now as i saw their site a few weeks back .............anyway thank u very much for ur timely help.

Hi Umar bhai,

I read ur post regarding RADIOLOGY electives at UCSF at some other site, i was really fascinated to learn that .Yesterday , i also opened its online ANESTHESIA application form at ur site but again i came across problem regarding name of medical school & school's country . It only states US and CANADA and i don't know how to solve it.

please let me know about it and also that of radiology dpt application

 TAKE CARE & WARM REGARDS.

hi usman.. dude the north shore form is still not working.. the link still says sorry page not found... u wrote that its working and u got the form.. can u please tell me did u get from same site? if not can u send me the link.. please.. thank u... All the best

Hi Umar bhai i have a question about b1/b2 visiter visa and f-1 student visa which one is better to have in a long run ? and how much better ?

   take care........

what do you mean by better and in what sense? b1.b2 visa is a business/ visitor visa... f1 is a student visa... both r equally good, if they serve their purpose... u r not allowed to work in both of them... there is no home stay/ waiver requirement in both of them... i dont think there is any comparison or competition between two... anyhow if u r comparing the visa requirement of universities... keep in mind that most of the universities require b1/b2 rather than f1 which is required only by few... so my suggestion... go for those universities that require b1/b2 to save your money while applying for two visas...

Umar bhai... i would be really grateful if u cud upload d format of a transcript letter required for electives cuz my college does not have format..

thanks in advance!!

god bless u!

Hey Andy how are u doing.. good to see u move up the ladder of collecting documents for electives..

Transcript is not a letter. It is a whole set of documents given to u from the college u finish Mbbs as an assessment of all u have done in there. It contains all ur postings(clerkships) details.. ur marks.. etc.. there is not fixed format for it.. Each college has its own format. U please enquire again to ur office clerk he has to know about this. It is not usually given before completion of ur degree. I had to meet my dean and take permission from him. But even after this if ur office clerk says he has no idea.. tell him u need a documentation of the clerkships u have done during mbbs and the details of ur marks of all ur years of Mbbs with a official seal on the documents.

Hope this helps.. if bhai has a format he will surely give u one..

All the best...

Bhai a small problem came... i had got my dean's letter around 20 days back.. now i am almost ready with all the documents and need to get signature of my dean on the application forms.. but now the dean has gone for a 2 month tour n another person is acting dean now.. if i take his sign on the forms.the deans signature will be different on the dean's letter and the application forms. So will it create a problem? what should i do?

guys i intend on applying to jefferson for elective in IM... i'v maild to the registrar regarding the same...however i wanted to know if Jefferson has tuition fees for d elective...

iam doing my internship in india. i would like to know whether psychiatry posting help me in getting residency. i heard that doing 4weeks of psychiatry posting during internship will be a plus point in getting residency.

thanks,

amjad

Yes Amjad!

If u get california letter you will be eligible for applying to residency in california. This would open more options for u during the match! as stated in the article, u have to show 4 weeks of rotation in psych either in ward duty or in internship or both added together!

Dear Umar,

Let me compliment you on this website which is really great. I am presently undergoing internship in India

i.e. in the State of Maharashtra and my internship will complete on 18th Feb 2010.  I have only applied

for USMLE Step 1 and dont hv TOEFL.  I have few questions which pls answer for me:

1.  Am I too late to apply for Electives in US at this stage (only 3 months for completing for internship)

2.  In case I dont complete Electives and proceed with USMLE Steps, what bottlenecks I will face

in my medical education / residency in US

3.  Are there any Universities in US who allow International Students to do Electives after completing Internship

4.  In case I want to go for Electives now, it is possible (as many Universities ask for minimum 3 months gap

from the date of application and commencement of Electives)

Pls reply my queries urgently as I am very much concerned.

Thx a ton,

DR. PRANEET

Thanks a lot for your kind words...

1. it is never too late but in case... as far as I know about India, you can always extend your internship... cant you?

2. It is always a chance game... u have more chances with high usmle score, research/ electives but every year many people get residency even without all this but there chances are comparatively less as compared to others but it does not mean it is impossible...

3. No.. but you can go observerships or research afterwards...

4. It is never too late to try...

I also took an extension in internship. Its no big deal. But if u lose the chance of electives it will matter. Other advantage of extending internship is your graduation date will also be extended so you would be appear a more fresh passout student. Its just an pseudo freshness.

On a funny note i would like to add that my college staff got surprised that i am willingly trying to delay my internship. he said ' yahan to student log chahta hai jaldi jaldi internship khatam ho aur aap poochte hain ki kitna zyada delay kar sakte hain'

Best Wishes

Hi Umar bhai , i want to apply for research electives in john hopkins. For that i corresponded with the student coordinator and she replied that i can apply for basic research not for cilnical or clinical research electives. Is that mean that i can't apply for gastro , hematology or oncology electives, If i can then how should i write elective choices , i mean depatment and elective name etc.

     reply soon and regards.

Hi Usman,

Please visit the post "Get the terms right"... in clinical electives you work in wards and see patients... in research electives, you dont even go to ward, just stay in offices doing some research in a lab or office without patient contact; you can apply for research elective in all specialties like gastro, hem onco etc... contact different faculty members from the specialty of your choice... email them requesting for research elective and if someone gives positive reponse, only then mention their department and elective name otherwise JHUSOM rarely accept students who have not contacted faculty members before...

Hi Umar

I wanted to ask you that is there any special way of refusing an elective. I mean are there sensitvities to be observed? because I might apply to that college in future for residency and i dont want to create a bad impression by refusing an elective.

Thanks a lot

Sincerely,

purav

Hi dude which elective r u rejecting n in which college?

hi purav,

most of the colleges dont see this as a bad thing, if you inform them in time... I refused about 3 or 4 places.... and none of them had any bad reaction, rather they appreciate you for informing in advance... not just few weeks in advance but atleast 2 or 3 months in advance...

There was a change in my college's exam schedule...  so I just sent them an email explaining that because of the recent changes in college schedule, I might not be able to attend the electives...

thanks a lot umar !! as always!... i was wonderig u had gone underground or something?? anycase great to get ur reply... m finally flyng out on the 29th... really nervous and excited at the sametime... hope everything is good at ur end

Sincerely,

Purav

most welcome anytime purav~ The pleasure is all mine... yaar I had gone somewhat underground... check website and reply to queries only once a week... have been somewhat busy and also preparing for step 1... remember me in your prayers...

Hi friends can any1 please tell me what is Home school certification form of Toronto university? And what all is required to be filled in it by my parent school?

Dear Umar bhai,

I have been a silent follower of your websit and it has helped me big time in every aspect pertaining to US applications and all.

 1. I was accepted by U Chicago, NIH, Johns Hopkins and U Minnesotta for reasearch electives but unfortunately I couldnt go because of my VISA security clearance which is taking a lot of time( 9 Months already). The sitting idle and waiting is a very painful process and im confused on what to do. Should i withdraw my application and apply again? Or should i rather wait because il be entering 4th year now at DMC and im concerned if my visa will be processed by the time il be needing it for clinical electives in my final year. Do you know of anyone with a similar situation as mine and how he/she managed it?

2. I sat for my TOEFL in my A Levels which was like 4 years back. TOEFL scores normally expires in 2 years and ETS doesnt send it directly to universities after that time span. When the universities are asking for only a copy of the score report, can i send a copy of that report or do i need to sit for the test again.

3. I sat for the CBT and my score was 283. Is CBT acceptable and is this score sufficient?

Looking forward to your reply.

Arsalan

Thanks a lot for your kind words.

1. I think you should wait. Moreover send an email to the mentioned universities that you are trying your level best to get your visa cleared and would let them know as soon as you get your visa. In case you fail to get visa in time, do let them know atleast 2 weeks in advance, apologizing them and explaining that the delay was on embassy's part, not yours... Moreover you can also request them to delay your electives.

2. I think u need to sit for the exam again!

3. I am not sure about it.

hi

how effective is doing a rotation at a private hospital instead of the colleges that provide official clerkship?

Would it be a observership or externship... as far as I know private hospitals dont usually offer electives.... anyhow keep one thing in mind... it is the LOR that matters the most... irrespective of wherever you go... a good letter from private practitioner is obviously better than an ordinary letter from some other place!

Hi, i am an IMG and i am bound to finish my internship by march. By almighty's grace, i could manage to secure 257 in step1, but i have done no electives and it is unlikely that i may be considered for externship; its too late for that. Also to be able to compete for 2011 match, time is short now. What are my chances of a match a good institution with this score and compatible scores in ck and cs, but no electives or LOR?

Have faith in yourself... u can match into a pretty decent place... that's a pretty good score... try to get good score in ck and get cs clear in 1st attempt... u can go for few months research if u r planning for a competitive specialty....

 hi Umar

first thanks for this amazing site i got to knw a lot through this place....after going thru it properly i finally applied to three univs n just now read two scary things!!

1) JHSOM requires pre-approval by faculty!??

its not mentioned anywhere on the site or form!! what can i do at this point?

2)an immunization certificate is required compulsory??

i did complete the form and get my doctors signature but didn submit an immunization certificate as such!!! any univs specifically ask for this or is it everyplace??

please reply as early as possible because i might need to make some serious changes!!

Thanks in advance!

 1. It is not... but I did not come across even a single visiting student at JHUSOM who did not got pre-approval from faculty... almost all of them contact the faculty before applying...

2. I sent it to every university as it always helps... it might not be required as such....

 Dear Umar Bhai,

Greetings. May this post finds you in fine health and spirits. This is going to be my first post on your much useful website.

Well, First of all I would say to you Bhai, that I have been humbled by your willingness and your actions to help people. Especially I have been  much encouraged to see you helping poor and needy people in Pakistan. Well I can say  that I have much to learn from you not just about applying for Electives but also about making other peoples' lives more pleasurable.

Dear Bhai, as of now I am completing my internship from a government medical college in India. And I am much desirous of applying for electives in order to get a few months USCE if I can, so that I may be in a better position to apply at good programs when I apply for Residency.

Bhai, I need your kind suggestion as I try to get NY letter of Eligibility. I would highly value any one else's suggestion on this issue including Umar's Bhai.

the web address http://www.mssm.edu/students/handbook/electives/pdf/nys_letter_of_eligibility.pdf mentions that DOCUMENTATION MUST BE PROVIDED THAT APPLICANT HAS COMPLETED THE MANDATED INFECTION CONTROL COURSE.

so friends out there can any one of you just guide me as to how  I may be able to provide this documentation.

So I thank you bhai and other people as well who took out time to read this post. Any suggestion or advice would be highlly valued. And Umar Bhai, will be praying for your desired performance in USMLE STEP 1.

God bless you,

Thanks a lot for your kind words! God bless you! May we all help humanity in whatever ways possible!

I am sorry I am not sure how to get mandated infection control course completed... but I m sure... someone has discussed it somewhere on this website in comments.... I would request medisid, vaibhav and andy to reply it appropriately.,,

thanks a lot once again for your good wishes!

1.Go to nysna.org

2. at the right side at bottom click "e learn courses"

3.then click course offerings

4.select the state in which ur college is

5.select mandated infection training

6.it takes $25 to get the course done with certificate which u can mail as a pdf attachment and print as well.

this is particularly accepted in New York State Education Department.

please correct me if im wrong somewhere

I wanted to know regarding NYU application (http://www.med.nyu.edu/registrar/assets/ERF.pdf). It is asking for the date of completion of our Neurology clerkship at our home school. Actually in India we dont have separate internship rotation for Neurology. In such case what should i mention in that column.

I think they themselves can guide u better.. I don't think they are asking for "internship" in neurology but "clerkship" in neurology.... which are ur 3rd, 4th year ward rotations as medical students...

Jazaak Allah khair Umar bhai for ur quick reponse....

hello umar bhai

i downloaded the north shore elective application form for applying at their school...while going through the form, i came across the following details that they require:-

i m confused...should not the "college attended" and "medical/dental school" details be same...
I m doing internship (equivalent to final year in us) from a medical college in india...and i shall only graduate next year probably in march 2011...so i entered the degree as MBBS and graduate date as 29 march,2011 in both the fields...is that fine??

and yes, i hv not undertaken part in clinical research as yet...but i do hav hospital/health care experience...what details should i enter in this field??

I tried contacting their elective coordinator but haven't received any response as yet

 kindly advise

1. Your college is from where you did BSc, FSc or A levels and these r the degrees u got. the date would obviously be different than medical degree graduation. confirm it from elective co-ordinator

2. you are correct abt medical school details.

3. you can mention your hospital/ health care experience.

thanks for the reply, umar bhai

1. I did my 11th and 12th class from college here in india...After that I cleared my premedical entrance test and got selected in medical college (school)...so i dont hav ny degrees like BSc, FSc etc.

so i gues i should leave those college fields blank...???

 2. what should I mention in hospital/ health care experience?? Number of weeks of experience in hospital (i.e no of weeks as in medical transcript??)

 3. What exactly should be written in a USMLE step 1 waiver application??? can someone upload its sample here

1. What is 12th Pre-medical class called in India, High School, College, FSc?

2. Yes u can mention ur weeks of experiences

3. Only that have you completed, studied and have passed exam for all the subjects of USMLE Step 1, testified by someone from your college, preferably dean/ registrar.

Its been almost a month since my application was inducted into processing by the NIH office... i havent got any reply yet.. learnt from sum1 that they take 10 days to usually e-mail an acceptance.. i haven't got any

shud i consider this as a rejection abt 2 come or shud i wait? or shud i mail Vicki to enquire the status of my application?? m gettin restless.

umar bhai n others - plz help!!

hi umar bhai,

i got acceptance in NIH before long time may b march 2010. But since then neither did i get any package which she mailed me she will send nor am i able to contact her in email or phone....plz help..my elective is scheduled for oct, so i want to set over with visa things

tankx
