Introduction

(1) When to start?
Start as early as possible, may be 12 months before your planned date, but you can get spots even by applying 2-3 months before.

(2) Things to gather before Applying?

Transcripts from your college/university(a sample can be downloaded from the bottom of the webpage)

Immunization (One can get it signed from any doctor, GP or a professor, doesn’t matter)

Malpractice insurance for 1 year

Health Insurance

HIPAA compliance training (Few universities require that like John Hopkins and U of Vermont etc)

Transcript is a set of documents given from the college as an assessment of all you have done. It contains all your postings(ward rotations/ clerkships) details.. marks.. etc.. there is not fixed format for it.. Each college has its own format. It is not usually given before completion of your degree. In short, you need a documentation of the clerkships you have done during mbbs and the details of your marks of all your years with a official seal/ stamp on the documents. Thanks to vaibhav for this valuable description!
A sample can be downloaded from the bottom of this webpage, thanks to medisid!

That’s pretty much all the stuff that is required at every university, then get your application signed from Registrar and send the package.

(3) Places to apply?
Go to this link if you want to prepare a list for your yourself otherwise I have also created a list for IMGs with direct links to the IMGs electives page in the university's website.
There is a list of places offering electives in the first link, easiest way is to search schools by geographic region, select “Schools that accept international students for electives” and select any region to search medical schools that accept international visiting students. Just confirm if a medical school requires Step 1 as well or not.
But there are many places that provide electives but are not listed over here, moreover sometimes the information here is not updated. Anyways it’s a good place to get an idea of the universities where you would like to go.

(4) Acceptance?

APPLY EARLY and try to maintain good relations from Electives coordinator because he/she will be the person who will deal with your application altogether.

hello umar bhai  and  everybody...

i urgently  require u r help...

i am desperate to do electives .... my internship just began from 16 march2010....

i wanted to know that at which places do i have  apply as  early as in may.>??//e.g  at nyu ,,i need to get permission before 10 may.....etc...

my problem is that i am goin to give toefl on 8 may...and so i wont be able to receive the scores before  june....

so do i need to hurry up...

also can anyone pls suggest names of universities where there are good chances of  getting electives in month of  feb-march...

i would be  so much grateful.....

again thankk you and wish u ppl great  success ahead....

also, i did like to ask one more  thing...

can anyone name a few universities where step 1 score is not mandatory  but preferable...so at such places

1. should i wait till i give step 1 and then apply so that i have higher chances of being selected

or

2. should i apply as soon as they start receiving app;ications

or

3. should i submit an application as early as i can, wait for their response ,if no / not favourable response then reapply after giving step 1.....

eg..as in NIH, they dont require step 1,,but u have higher chances if u send u r step 1 scores ..

i would be so much grateful to all you people..

thanks again...

e

check out the mentioned list in detail.

1. send applications early for universities that operate on first come first serve basis and send ur score/ result later.

2. if a university doesn't operate on first come first serve basis... send them the complete application with your results...

Hey umar bhai!

i am currently enrolled in the last year of my medical school in India and i wish to apply for electives. I am very confused about a few things. Actually i think it is too late because my internship ends in March and now it is August. I am taking my TOEFL exam in August and i wish to know where i could apply sso that i could probably get an elective.. Further more there are a number of institutes that want a J1 or H1 visa to come but i already have a US visa and i can't change it's status for another two years... Please help me out..

Eagerly waiting for reply

Thank you!

thanks for your reply, umarbhai!!

can you please guide me how i give my TOEFL?  i have only 2 mths and 10 days for preparing for GRE. should i go for TOEFL before GRE or after it? also i want to apply for electives for nov, dec , jan and feb. would my application be on time if i give my TOEFL in june end ,the results would be expected around 10 of july(online)??

well, i decided quite late to go for usmle, i have passed my final m.b.b.s. in feb, 2011. i haven't still given my TOEFL.currently i am preparing for GRE which i am going to give in june 9th. i am totally confused about how to go ahead! am i too late to apply for external rotations? should i give TOEFL before GRE? how should i further plan out? are externals so much important that i should not try mle without getting externals? are there chances that i can get good hands on clinical experience afterwards as i am planning to do m.ph. in biostatistics from a good university? i am a good student and i have confidence that i can get exceptional scores in all exams i will appear for. please someone guide me!!!!
