From Where to Start?

If you are planning to apply for electives in US, the early you start the better it is. I would recommend doing the following things as early as possible, I prefer the ideal and most suitable time to start in Jan or early:

1. Baylor does not give electives to students without authorization nos. If you are too late(which by the end of feb, almost 14 months before your elective), they have given all the authorization nos for Pakistan and you dont stay eligible for them. You dont have to pay anything for the authorization nos, just send an email to visitingmed@bcm.edu and donnak@bcm.tmc.edu with following information for authorization number request
Student name
Student address
Student phone number
Student e-mail address
Name and address of medical school
Dates of request for visiting medical student electives

Visit the following link for further details.

contribution by medisid: Now b4 applying u have to send in ur particluars by email to get an authorization number. as per their norms they have rationed the amount of applicants from each country and issue auth # for such purpose. if they have issued the total ration/quota for that country, they will not issue more. and u wont have a chance to send in your applications. PLUS these authorizations numbers are issued only during the beginning of academic year. like for 2009-2010 year, they had put up on their website that they will issue auth # for all aplications in academic year(09-10) in early april 2009. i used to check regularly but they suddenly put up a notice inviting requests for auth # on 10th Apr etc( im not sure abt the date) and within 24-48 hrs the whole quota for INDIA was fulled and i was rejected a request for auth # stating that my country limit has reached. i missed by a day. IMAGINE THAT. So if you are thinking for applying baylor, check their website everyday.

2. One of the top 3 US universities is UCSF, they have a very simple application process. Unfortunately they provide electives only in radiology and anesthesia; that too only when you already have a visa or don't need a visa(US citizen or US Permanent Resident) as they don't offer any visa. The good thing is they give you acceptance just on an email(for radiology) and then you have to send them documents within next 30 days.

But once again you have to apply really early in Jan-Feb about 14 months in advance. If you are interested in radiology elective, visit mentioned link for details and send an email to randy.ortega@radiology.ucsf.edu. For Anesthesia electives, use the online application system in the following link

3. LIJMC - Many people have misused such sites in the past and it leaves a really bad impression. LIJMC has a good reputation. The online application process for it is very simple.
For general info on electives at LIJMC

Online application form
You dont have to mail in application package - just the online
form - later scanned copies of required documents can be emailed
once you have received the acceptance.

4. Maimonides Medical Center - I know seniors who got accepted there. Again - its worth applying and isn't going to be too much of a
hassle since one can apply online. Keep in mind you can apply only 4-6 months in advance.
Visit this link

5. Get your TOEFL done in the first few weeks of Final Year(ideally within first 10 days as it takes a month for the result). Its fees is only 150 $ and with TOEFL, you can apply to many institutions like NIH where there is no fees for electives. Moreover where TOEFL is a requirement by most of the US universities including NIH, Northwestern etc all the others specifically prefer international students with TOEFL e.g Yales, Harvard, Vermont, Mount Sinai etc. Having a score of above 22 in reading, learning, writing and 26 in speaking (total=90) is considered a good one. All the prep is done from Barron's Book for TOEFL with CD of practice tests. It takes hardly 2-3 days to study for it. To apply for TOEFL click on the following link and for futher information click on the following link.

6. One of the top places for electives, NIH, has associations with many big universities including John Hopkins. You need to clear TOEFL with a speaking score of minimum 26. You have to just fill in the online application form.

Kindly mention valid email ids and contacts of the registrar and one faculty member(some very friendly and co-operative one). Unfortunately our registrar and faculty members would never reply to NIH online LOR request emails themselves. You need to email them an online LOR and request them to email it back to NIH.

7. If any of you has relatives in Toronto, Canada or intends to go there, University of Toronto has one of the best and simple online application process for electives. Moreover its the top university of Canada and an elective in it, carries equal weightage as compared to electives in any well-reputed university of US. Moreover you dont have to mail any documents.

For further details click on the following link and this link

For online application click on this link

It wont take long to apply in all these places and at the end its all worth. Once you miss the time frame, you wont be able to find a spot in these universities as most of the spots are filled by that time. Moreover then the only costly universities with many requirements like malpractice coverage and personal health insurance are left behind. All the above mentioned universities are really good ones and offer electives at a very small price. So I would strongly recommend sparing some time and getting done with all the steps mentioned.

Hi Umar,

Could you kindly tell me how long before my intended elective at BCM should I mail them requesting an Authorization No.?

I couldn't understand what you meant by "14 months before your electivetive"!

Thanks and take care.

Baylor has become quite impossible this year compared to last year when many people got in.

Now b4 applying u have to send in ur particluars by email to get an authorization number. as per their norms they have rationed the amount of applicants from each country and issue auth # for such purpose. if they have issued the total ration/quota for that country, they will not issue more. and u wont have a chance to send in your applications. So if you are thinking for applying for 2010-2011 better put that baylor site on your mozilla fastdial and check for it everyday (begininning 2010).

Analogy the H1B visa cap/limit thats gets filled in day or two for every year!

RACE AGAINST TIME!

hi medisid.... thanks a lot for the valuable contribution but Baylor has always been like this... it was the same way even the last year and always before that... please read the first point on this webpage... thanks a lot for your valuable contribution... tc n best of luck!

I meant literally about 14-15 months before you plan to go for electives.... as medisid mentioned in quite detail... that u cannot apply without authorization numbers and authorization numbers are given in long time advance.... tc n best of luck!

Hello. I am applying to Mt Sinai for electives in September 2010. But I guess my chances of getting accepted are pretty low since its quite late. So i'm thinking of putting in April 2011 as an alternative date. My final prof ends in March 2011. Mt Sinai requires a letter from the University if you haven't given the USMLE Step 1. Unfortunately, the admin of my university has mentioned on that letter that I will be completing my MBBS in March 2011; and they are not going to change it. Can I still apply with that letter? What should I do now?

hey prasannagonti

check this out.. http://www.mssm.edu/about-us/services-and-resources/student-resources/electives/foreign-visiting-students

Guess what..!! You could have looked up for this on the net by yourself brother. let me assure you, if you want electives, you will have to do your homework well..

All the best

hi umar bhai !

greetings

i have applied for electives in mt. sinai for jan-mar 2011 as i was thinking of ending my internship in mar 2011.

but i have recently come across the rule of my univ stating that i'll have to complete my inetrn till dec 2010.

so i was wondering how do i go about it ?

1. should i ask her to consider my application for the earlier dates like oct/nov/dec ???

or

2. should i ask her that i'll send another application form but she should process it with my previous documents ?

or

3. should i ask her to refund my application fees and let me file another fresh application ??

bhai , my step one score comes on this wed, i want to know whether i stand a chance of getting electives of october if i apply now; ie late may ?? or may be november or december ???

another query bhai; if i go to usa on b1 visa; which i'll procure showing my step 2 cs visa letter ; can i get it converted to F1 when i get an acceptance or vice versa

or can i have b1 and f1 together ??

You can try all three of them... better contact the elective co-ordinator and she would be able to guide you in the best way...

You can certainly be accepted for October if you apply now... best of luck!

I am not sure about the visa thing... if someone knows the answer to it, please comment! Thanks!

BCM is no longer accepting International medical students. They have strictly asked not to mail them in this regard. In such a case how can we get an authorization number? I am from India. Which other universities ask for the number and is the same no. applicable to all? I have just started with the process with info u have provided on this site. So Umar sir please guide me regarding this.

AOA,

I'm currently a 4th year M.B.B.S. student at KEMU. I'm interested in applying in radiology at UCSF, however, their official elective policy states that they don't accept international students any longer. Should I still go ahead and send an email to  randy.ortega@radiology.ucsf.edu ? Or are they very strict about the policies they have published on their website?

Aslkm Umar bhai,

I'm an intern this year at A.M.U, Aligarh. I'm looking for joining an electives in US this Dec'11 itself, i start the internet search since march'11 and i'm familiar with the process of electives joining but still couldn't figure out how to break the ice.

I'll take my step 1 in Sept- Nov'11 as I've made the payment and taken this eligibility period.

  1. I've given the TOEFL in hurry (on 3rd from registration) with purely unknown to the format and got very bad score:

Reading 21

Listening 20

Speaking 18

Writing 21

  • Aggregate is 80. So I don't know what to do with this score.
  • Given and cleared BLS-ACLS.
  • Got very good LORs from 6-7 professsors.
  • written my letter of intent.
  • Attended an international conference at ROMANIA for my 2 abstract presentation.
  • Prepared my CV latest one.
  • sent almost 500 mails to all the colleges mentioned in aamc.org website. Got reply from very few (nearly 10-12) as many of them are not accepting International students now

I've paid Rs 25,000 and joined a professional Agent in New Delhi "The Chopras" here  which is said to pioneer in helping for electives but i found it to be nearly useless.

I got your website info from my friend and i have a lot of hope for help from your side so please help me urgently regarding:

1.Which colleges i can get now for dec'11 till april'12 as i'm planning to leave my internship for the electives .?

2.colleges with tution fees upto $2000 are acceptable.. so please suggest me accordingly.

3. presently i'm thinking to apply for Internal medicine electives in:

  • Weill Cornell Medical college
  • Lousiana state University and Health Centre, Shreveport
  • University of Illinois,Chicago
  • Ummiversity of Penn (for radiology elective)
I don't know how much i'm doing these things correctly in applying above...

so please help uurgently..

if possible send me any college links u have for my application ,keeping in mind about my scenario in total.

waiting with anticipation for your reply.

Thanks for wonderful website, although I've started from yesterday night itself and haven't slept yet since my reading the blogs of your site.

so thanks again .
