TOEFL's Preparation

All the prep is done from Barron's Book for TOEFL with CD of practice tests.

  • If your basic skills of English(Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking) are really good then you dont even need this book(however I personally believe that the CD that comes with it, is wonderful for practice). Just download the following content and go through it.

hi umar bhai, i just wanna konw what does it take to have 26 on toefl  exam . is it using sophisticated words, speaking slowly but coherently or using american accent. plz reply soon as i am going to take it in couple of days.

Dear Usman!

From my personal experinces, 26 is given to those ppl who can use complex structures in sentences quite efficiently, speak in words and language which are rapid but comprehensible, yet not slow as a new learner. But remember to keep your accuracy to highest even if speaking faster. The other thing which speaking tests is how u think, synthesize and express the said topic; i think this is important for >26 score. This means that u have to think good ideas and words and sentences for future lines as you speak the present line. If you are from a English medium school, then this would not be a big problem. What I did was practise speaking for a week from the given samples in barrons, princeton or from internet in front of your buddy in time based format. This TOEFL buddy practise will certainly boost your speaking score by good points in your exam. The most important and difficult part for us Asians is the speaking part as we rarely converse in english as compared to reading(all the books!), writing(mbbs theory exams!) or listening(HBO! n Star!).

AND NO AMERICAN ACCENT! you are not tested as a native US speaker, but as a speaker who can speak english understandable to other native speakers(test evaluators). So you would be wasting your time learning to copy american accent. I didnt speak in american accent and yet crossed the 26 mark.

Best Wishes.

hi usman, nice reply from medisid...

i got 26... and first of all I would say NO AMERICAN ACCENT... NO COMPLEX/ SOPHISTICATED WORDS just simple easy clear words... with a good flow without any "hmm aaa aaa hmmm" and "unnecessary and" etc etc...

Thank you umar bhai for helping me last time.

I would be highly obliged if u could please  tell me that how many days of preparation it takes to cross the 26 mark in speaking in TOEFL.

Will 7 days prep would be fine, actually i have to apply for yale and rochester in march thats why i wanna hurry on toefl.

Also can u please give me some idea about what are he chances of getting an elective in yale if i apply to them as soon as their schedule for new electives this year is declared,do they generally provide electives to img or they wont help much with the elective thing?

Thanks u soooo much in advance

umar

Most welcome anytime... the pleasure is all mine...

Honestly speaking I am not sure... I did not study for TOEFL for more than a day... so I am not sure...

I am not sure if one can PREPARE for TOEFL because I think your English skills are not built in a week or so but after years of schooling... but again  this is my personal opinion....

Electives in Yale are strictly because of luck and availability... that's what I experienced...

Hey,

I just wanted to know whether I can write TOEFL with an expired passport. I gave my passport for renewal but the process here is very slow and I'm afraid I might get late because of that. So can I write TOEFL in the meantime with my expired passport number?

Regards

umar

Honestly speaking I am not sure but as far as I know passport in TOEFL is used as a photo id only for identification purposes... obviously you are not traveling somewhere that you need a valid passport but at the same time... most of the places consider a valid passport as the only photo id... try going the center few days earlier and ask them if they would allow you to sit in exam... or better email ETS directly...
